Hi guys, new to this site. Just bought this 97 Pontiac Sunfire SE, with a 2.4l engine and 5-speed manual trans.Killer deal on the car, $400 needing a clutch. After getting the new clutch , pressureplate, slave cylinder/throwout bearing in, 2wks later reverse goes completely. Was already wining so I knew it was about to go, but I have been looking for another trans since i got the damn car and havent had any luck, since its the 2.4l.
Question is, whats the difference between the 2.2 and 2.4 manual transmissions? I have looked at them and seems that the trans is the same and the bellhousing is different.
ive been advised that as hard as I drive this car, rebuilding my current one is a no-no, is this true? Ive been trying to read thru all the posts but im on dailup and this aint exactly a fast thing to do.
Ive been reading about these getrag 00-up transmissions. Is this a good swap? I plan to turbo rhis car if i keep it. Love the power and gas mileage , but need it dependable.
I can get a 2.2l manual trans for $100 all day long though, so for right now if it only takes a bellhousing swap that would be great, but a getrag with a bellhousing swap, is that possible or is there way more to it?
so far as i've come to understand, yes the trans is the same, with a different bolt pattern on the bellhousing. also, i dont thing the bellhousings can be swapped. so basically, if you cant find the 2.4 manual, you'd have to pull all the guts out of the new trans to put in yours. as for rebuilding, i dont see why it would make a difference how hard you drive if you get the kit that comes with the synchros. i know nothing of the getrag, but i hear its supposed to be better than the isuzu. personally, i think that alll stems from the fact that the isuzu's have been beat on longer than the getrags have been around. im sure someone will help you more than i can though

my dad is iffy on the rebuilding of my trans since it wines so badly. I have no clue what the kit comes with, but he suggests that I find another trans because the hard parts (gears n such) are expensive in manual transmissions. I have no clue if this is true, but the car was leaking gear oil when i first got it, and Im not sure how long it was driven with no gear oil, but im sure the gears have lost thier temper and are brittle just like my dad thinks, since seems like there are no teeth whatsoever to grab in my reverse gear. Id assume theres just as much damge on 1st through 5th also by now.
Thanks for the info
k I found one.... I think.
94 Grand Am internal slave cylinder, 4 cyl, starter on top. seems to be the same trans, even has both trans mounts. just wanna make sure its the right one , i gotta pay $350 for this one, but if it really is it, no problem payin that.
So is it the right tranny?
A 2.2 litre isuzu transmission has different gearing than the 2.4 transmission. Bellhousings are different.
The 1994 transmission you found is a New Venture Gear T-550 transmission... while it looks identical to the isuzu it is entirely different in its quality. 1 gajilliion times better. To swap to this transmission is a bit of work - search up NVG swap in this forum to find out whats involved. I am running an NVG myself and I will never go back.
If I were you and I had the time to do it, I'd do the NVG over another 2.4 isuzu any day.
Good luck.

Slowly but surely may some day win this race...
welll i got it in thier, the one that i found from the grand am with the internal slave. everything seems to be working fine, even was able to con the autoparts store into giving me a whole new clutch kit under warranty, so everything worked out well. except for finding a broken bolt on that bracket that holds the passenger cv shaft up in the middle, but hopefully thats nuttin to worry about.
Id like to thank you guys for answering my questions, was alot of help for me and made things so much easier being prepared.
