Has Anyone Had this Problem Before?

This has been happening for years. It started when my car was owned by my dad, and he never got it fixed... So it just went on and on for years. It's not getting worse at all. It's just always the same.
Here's the problem. I have a manual tranny and whenever I put it in reverse it grinds. I know it's the synchro's, because I've had the clutch replaced, and it only does it in reverse. But, it doesn't do it all the time, just most of the time. For example, backing out of a parking spot on a level surface, it will grind going into reverse. But, backing out of a spot on an hill with my nose up, if I let it go back a bit, then put it in reverse, it doesn't grind 90% of the time.
Has anyone ever had this problem with the manual trans before?
And I'm looking to get a better tranny too. What's a good 5-speed that will bolt up to the 2.4 that will be able to handle more power, harsher shifts and the like?

well, assuming you have the isuzu trans the reverse gear is not have a syncro unlike the getrag....i have the isuzu trans as well and i just put it in to first gear and then into reverse....no syncros on that gear....i have the same issue so i am assuming you have the same......hope this helps

i would search around for a getrag trans if your looking for smooths shifts and something that will handle more power

Per the dealership because of the design of the tranny you should go to first (or another gear ) before going to reverse. When I had my 97 Z24 manual. Mine did that. If I went to another gear first it would not.

Yeah, just put it in 5th first, then reverse. This happens on all Isuzu transmissions.

You can't shift from 5th directly to reverse. There's a lock in the transmission that prevents it.

You can shift into any forward gear to line all the gears up properly. Cuz like mentioned, it't cant be a bad syncro on the reverse gear... because your car (99, has the Isuzu tranny) does not have a reverse syncro.
