Manual Trans Fluid

I'm not sure what to think about this. AllDataDiy.com and Chiltons say the same thing: Fill fluid until it reaches the "peep-hole," but the recommended amount is 1.8 quarts. I put in 2 full quarts and I still can't see any fluid from the "peep-hole." So what is it? 1.8qts or fill to the hole?

In theory, 1.8 qts for a simple drain and fill. However, if you've taken out the transmission, chances are you've removed some fluid that would not normally be drained by simply unscrewing the drain plug.

Go to the hole.

I'm just trying to figure out how to go about this.
My car has the Getrag, and over 50k, so I looked at the owners manual, and it says it never needs to be changed, and I looked at a Haynes manual, and it says 50k intervals. The owners manual says Dextron3 ATX fluid, but I've heard everything from that to synchromesh, to motor oil. Also, I see on the top of the trans a bolt with an inverted hex pattern, I assume that is where you fill it.
Based on that, I have a couple of questions.
First, is the hex bolt correct, and does it have a level indicator?
Next, if above is yes, how much fluid belongs after draining (no trans removal)
Last, what really do you, or better yet should be used?
Thanks for your time.

I'm in the exact same boat, except you're not seeing the fill hole. It is behind the hex plug to the left. The drain plug is red plastic. The manuals say to fill until you see it at the hex plug, but that sure isn't 1.8 quarts. Not Even Close! I put 4 quarts in and I still can't see it. Be careful not to overfill though. Liquid is pretty incompressible and your case will explode if you fill it to the top.

all data at works says 1.8q for the 00+ getrag. and 2q for the 95-99 izusu transmission

but also says that it is aproximent, so fill to the peep hole

I hate to sound like an idiot, but exactly where might I find the "peephole", I could not find anything like it on my inspection, and thanks Z, I will look further into the fill plug when time allows.
On a side note, this seems to be a bit complicated for something that should be straight up easy.
Anyone else with the fluid recommendations could help, I might be a bit old school, but I've never been a believer in "no change lubricants" or it's relatives.
