when i shift into 5th gear, i hear a grinding noise. i think its the synchros, any suggestions? do i have to replace the tranny and if so, should i get a regular tranny or a special one designed for hard/fast driving?

Not speaking from experience, but from what I've read, it's easier to swap out the whole transmission than it is to replace the synchros. Of course, since you'd have to crack open the transmission anyway, you could put a limited slip differential in there if you so desire. Since you're into hard/fast driving, the limited slip differential (lsd) would help you maintain power to the pavement, helping you to control your car, helping you to not die. Not dying is definately a plus in my book.
