Sunday, September 10, 2006 11:00 AM
hey guys i got a problem with my syncros possibly . when i shift from first to second and low throttle ,everything feels fine but when i get on it like when im on the track . It feels that second gear isnt there. i know that sounds weird but i put the shifter down and sometimes all it does is grind a little but it wont engage. but at low throttle and low rpms it feels fine and the more throttle i give it, the less it feels like it is engaging . so someone please help me out and tell me what is going on

If the synchro's are done, then you have to pull the tranny apart and replace them, possibly along with other parts (shift forks, seals, bearings, etc). It's real hard to diagnose over the internet with the info you've provided, best bet is to take it somewhere (tranny shop) and let them drive it.

i think what im going to do is just find a tranny with under 50k and just replace it , it would be easier to do that than to f**k around with the syncros and the bearings

I had a similar problem with 3rd gear for a while. it turned out to be that my shift cable was frayed and binding up inside itself. check the simple stuff first. might just be a matter of changing a cable.

i was originally thinking that it was the shift cables but i have had them replaced in the past . the part that throws me off about this time is that if feels differently from when i drive normally and then when i get on it . dont you think that if it was the shift cables , the problem would be constant and not changing

thats a possibility, but i know that with mine, it started off as on occasional problem, and as the cable got worse the shifting got worse. when it was the worst i had to really softly shift it or all it would do is grind. Its just a suggestion. i'd hate to see ya rip out a tranny for a simple problem. I know with mine me and a buddy of mine spent about 2 hours messing with it. we had 2 trannies and we took both of them apart trying to figure out what the hell it was. then at the last minute we just happened to notice that the cable was frayed inside the casing. wouldnt have known if we didnt see part of the wire sticking out. try taking your cable off and shift the transmission by hand and see if it goes in. if it does then you may have a bad cable. good luck either way.

the problem is , that when i am at idle everything shifts perfect the way it should, its just when i get on it , and reverse is also starting to have trouble engaging

got clutch fluid? hehe
usually when cables are going out the gear feels "mushy" and wont engage....but rule of thumb is .if its grinding when your trying to put it in gear then its the syncro's...sorry to say it...
itll probably be cheaper to buy another tranny than try to fix..just a heads up

yeah the gear doesnt feel mushy at all , i found a tranny to put in so i think i will be alright , i just dont want to have kick myself in the face when it could be the shift cables

typically when you lose 2 4 and reverse something happend to a shifter cable......but it COULD be something else....best thing to start with is pull your center console off and check the cable ends..THEN take the cables off at the linkage and check the WHOLE cable for splits and make sure each one is working properly...please do this before you start throwing money at the tranny ok

It is your shifter cables, not the tranny.

what about the shifter cable plate, where the cables are bolted to , i know half of it is in the tranny

well how about this...get the cable problem fixed first ..then youll be half way done ..then worry about what else is wrong...kinda hard to diagnose a tranny over the internet when we already know your cables arnt working correctly...dont ya think?

I agree its the cables....thats the exact same problem i had. to get the cables from the tranny all ya need to do is look on the tranny at the end of the cables. you'll see the ends where they slide into the plate. theres a small sorta snap ring that holds them in. use pliers to pinch the tabs together and they should release. then just slide them out. just be careful not to break the rings. on the inside of the car your hardest problem is going to be getting the cables out from underneath the heating ducts. for some reason gm decided to run the tranny cables then put the heating ducts right over them, why is beyond me. theres also a rubber grommet in the firewall. it was a pain in the a## on my car. other then that you should be alright. trust me, do this before you go throwing a tranny in it.
