I may be insane for even thinking of this....
Wednesday, September 06, 2006 6:09 PM
I was at work, finishing up an oilchange on a saturn vue. Noticing it had a 2.2L ecotec (good thing). I returned under the car to replace the drain plug and noticed a drive shaft passing towards the rear end.... interesting, considering the engine is transverse mount. Looking at the trans, i also see a pair of halfshafts to the front wheels. OMG!!!! 4wd ecotec!!!

I can only imagine the work required to fit the whole setup into a cavalier or sunfire, but i think it would be worth it in the end. Ima start looking into what it would take to do this.... because its definitely gonna be worth it to me.

Seems more doable than a RB26 in a Cavy lol.

now hold on.

I know that that is the general consensus when it comes to a major project, but come on man. the elevation of our platform relays on outside the box thinkers. If we do nothing more then the basic boltons with the ocasional heavy motor build, were just like every one elese. the thought of a no linear Idea should be pushed, regardless of the dueabilty.

now my input on the project.

Im sure it can be done, the problem lies in the amount of custom fab. anyone who partakes in the project is going to need to due most of it them selves, with no prior help from trailblazers.

I'm seriously considering it now, considering my one friend has a vue with a recently deceased ecotec under the hood. He's gonna junk the car, so i figure i might as well salvage anything i could make use of, and the drivetrain is one of them. Major fabrication would be the driveshaft tunnel, trans mounts and the rear suspension, aside from the electronics. I think the rear suspension end of things would most likely end up being the biggest pain of all.

Just the thought of doing this is makin me sport.....

I'm all for cool new exciting things. Nobody would love to see an AWD J more than me. Let me offer a bit of my insight though...

After 2 J's, a nitrous kit, turbo kit, 3 body kits, 3 interiors, 3 sets of tires, 2 suspensions, and probably about $20,000+ in parts and labor, what am I left with? A car thats worth $5,000, a bankruptcy, and struggling to pay my bills over the cost of keeping my car running, and I make $50k+ a year.

Will an AWD J be done? Probably not. If it is done however, I believe that some enterprising company with a lot of extra money laying around will be the first to accomplish it, instead of somebody with hopes and dreams. Before taking on this project, take a step back, and realize these things:

1. The car may never run again, don't expect it to.
2. The car will NOT be worth the amount of money you put into it, on top of that, if you ever decide to sell it, good luck. Nobody wants a car you need an engineering degree to work on, non-standard parts, custom fabrication, etc.
3. Expect to go through 1 or 2 chassis.
4. Can you truely afford it. Price out the body work (cutting your car in half and tunneling a driveshaft, welding it back together), price the transmission, custom fabrication, all the little parts, and then compare it with a budget of what you spend each month and see if you can truely afford it, I know I couldn't.

I think it would be a cool project. But I'm with Shifted on this one.

I've got the AWD drivetrain already, free. I have enough sheetmetal and welding gear to create the tunnel, and it doesnt require cutting the car in half, just removing a section of the floor to create the tunnel. The hardest part is the rear suspension and the wiring, gotta swap in the harness from the vue and the PCM. All told, i have the materials and the knowledge on hand (my father is VERY well versed in fabrication), just gonna wait till i have another car to drive so i can keep this one on a lift for a few months.

hmm, $6000 for a cavalier, all other parts from vue FREE, welder, sticks, sheet metal, heck, any kind of metal i might need, including pneumatic cylinders, valves and proportioning valves, as well as any kind of hydraulic device you might need.... 3000 square foot barn, with a garage and a lift!!!

and its all loaded with crap he might never use, but i sure as hell will!!!!!

If not for dreamers, nothing exciting would ever happen......Good Luck in the research, budgeting, headaching and making of your project. Hobbies are for having fun, or at least it is for me, so knock yourself out and if it doesn't work out at least your imagination will bring you a new and exciting idea soon enough!

This person is VERY bright!

If there was not a dream there would be NOTHING! honestly were would i begin. How did the air plane get invented? Some one who had a DREAM to fly through the air. How did the automobile get invented ... by a guy how had a dream about not having to walk every were.

Anything AND everything is once a dream. And im sorry shifted but every one who invented anything had a dream about it, probly thought it through thinking exactly what you did about having enough money, about having enough time, if it was something they could sell, if they would possibly me able to make them money. People need to take a risk at a dream they feel can be done. Some people will weight the Cost to Worth it out differently. Who knows this guy might become the first one to enter a circuit race and win with his AWD cavy.

you know how i feel, get that second car and get started!
