From what i can tell Gm uses the 4t40/4t45E in the 200hp G6 and the 240hp Malibu ss
does that mean the j body trans can handle that? I got all my info on
www.gminsidenews.com any ideas anybody
Malibus use the 4T45E. It's quite a bit stronger than the 4T40E that comes in our cars.
o thanks for clearing that up, but isn't the case the same? the website has them grouped together does that mean you could switch them
From what I was told by some of the higher end people over @ GM Racing, they were working on a 4T45E tranny to hold close to 600HP for the cobalts... last I had heard, they had a few out there being tested... but that was about it......
the 4t45e is much stronger than the 4t40e. the 4t40e can handle a good amount of horse power, but wasnt ment for handling engines with very high torque. im still not 100% sure on the subject but from what i hear the 4t45e can handle alot more power. transmission expirience torque multipication as the engine tries to drive the transmission, give the transmission too much power and you could probably shear the linkage right off.
Injection is nice but id rather be BLOWN!
bump for anyone who knows if the 4t45 and 4t40 share a case

may be its the same trans only better internals. the website groups them together
from what ive heard, a 4t45 can be used on our cars. the 3100 and 3400 engines can be mated up to the 4t40e i believe, so it would only make sense that the 4t45 can be used in a j.

Can be adapted for your car. You are going to have some trouble finding a good core as they are not so common.
You are looking at the same trans pretty much. I would advise taking your 40 and rebuilding it with tougher spec parts. You are going to waste too much time trying to find a good 45 unless you have one off hand.
You can find all the diagrams online and then order the parts.

Yea, ummmm. I used to have a J-body...
Red Eagle, Alto and a few others say they do not make any hi-performance parts for the 4t40e like clutches and bands so David if you know where to order this parts, I´m sure some of us are interested...
4T45 Tranny can take upwards of 200 whp and 300 ft pounds of torque. It's a strong little tranny. I would know, I have one
. Yes I'm resurecting this thread, sue me.
i read the whole thing and i didnt even notice it was old, lol
this post was made a few months back for anyone looking for performance parts for the 4t40e

I took a saturn L series 4t45e 's internals and swapped them into the casing for a 2.4 bellhousing . yes it worked. And I also had a yank converter installed on it. Unfortunetely it only worked for a couple hundred miles. I did not dive into the trans to rebuild it. I simply bought a new 4t40e for cheap and that is holding up fine. Just keep replacing them if they break.
Dragracemyz24 is no more . Chupacabra devowered.

Not exactly, very simular, the housings are different casting numbers, but the bolt patterns look really really close.
Already looking into this in depth......
A lot more info.
Under other trend when you get to

3400 V6 Aleros and Grand Ams have the 4T45E (as well as other models with the same engine). Not so hard to find one.

450WHP Turbo Ecotec swap in the works...
i wouldn't swap to a 4t45e because the max shift rmp's are lower than the 4t40e, i have the source for the info i posted. when i find it, i'll post the link. correct me if i'm wrong but would'nt the lower max shift speed limit the use of your rpm band. the link will also show that there isn't a dramatic difference in power capability
tranny statistics, here's the link i was taking about.
Maximum shift speed: 6500 rpm (MN4)
5800 rpm (MN5)
Maximum engine torque: 190 lb-ft (260 Nm) (MN4)
205 lb-ft (278 Nm) (MN5)
Maximum gearbox torque: 325 lb-ft (440 Nm) (MN4)
325 lb-ft (440 Nm) (MN5)
you be the judge?
