Trick Shift fluid, a mechanic's advice...
Monday, August 07, 2006 3:48 PM
I was talking to a mechanic about trick shift ATF and he all but begged me not to use it. He says the fluid works because it contains tiny abrasive particles which eat away at your tranmission over time. He claims he's seem more than a few transmissions junked by that stuff and that he wouldn't let the stuff anywhere near his cars. I took his advice and bought Mobil1 ATF instead. You guys hear anything similar?

You would have no problems using it in the three speed, but don't use it in the four speed. The 4T40E need the recomended viscosity for the clutches to get the specified grip, or thet will burn out. The 3T40/TH125C uses the older type valving and clutch material. Infact It's best to use the original Trick Shift in the 3sp, to reduce slippage and wear on the clutches. Same as in the 60s & 70s for Type F for drag racing.

The original Trick Shift is a Dexron II/Type F equivalent, with fewer friction modifiers than Dexron II and more stabilizers and anti-foaming agents than Type F fluid.

Synthetic Trick Shift is a synthetic Dexron III, that has the better heat stability and anti-foaming agents, but fewer friction modifiers than regular Dexron III sythetic fluids.

pffft please what a load of @!#$... it has different frictional qualitys than a regular dextron but does NOT have tiny particles in the oil.... Its basically the same as Type F trans fluid.

I've used just about every brand there is, i stick with my mobil 1 AFT (full synthetic stuff) and my Type F depending on the trans.

trick shift is Dex-II, synthetic trick shift is Dex-III the tec is right using it in newer (98 is newer) can lead to warn clutches, planetary gears, sun gear, sprag....so on.

I thought Syncromesh wasn't ATF though, the Getrag requires ATF.

On a side note, I have tried just about every Synthetic ATF out there in the Getrag. I prefer Hurst Trick Shift, Mobile 1 wasn't bad either. Tried the B&M recently and didn't seem as smooth as the Trick Shift.

Trick Shift fluid is just marked up, and dyed Type F fluid. You can get the same stuff at the Dollar Store for a buck.

Hey DJ Barfy,

The Synthetic TrickShift is good in the 4T40E / 4 Speed Automatic

You're welcome, one of the "fawkers"!
