Tranny issues - HELP!!!
Sunday, July 02, 2006 8:34 PM
Ok first off the car is a 99 Cavalier Z24 5spd so it has the Isuzu 5spd tranny in it. I honestly know very little about the internal workings of manual trannys as in the past all i've run were auto's for drag racing and what not. The Cavy tranny hadn't given me any issues since i bought it. My car is now pushing around the 300whp mark and i know this is pushing the limits of the stock tranny but thats not my question...

I was out driving and tuning the Cavy the other night and as i hit the on ramp exit i got on the car in 2nd, the tires broke loose and i shift into 3rd still spinning, when the tires catch traction the car kicked out of gear into neutral so I try to put it back into 3rd and it goes fine, no grinding or anything, but when I shift into 4th its like hitting a brick wall the car will not go into 4th gear at all. I have 1,2,3,and 5th gears and there is no grinding, noises, or anything out of the ordinary with these gears, does anyone have any ideas of what the issue might be or what i should check first before i just go and buy a new tranny? Feel free to ask any questions you would like and i'll do my best to answer them. Tranny experts please help, like i said my knowledge and experience with a busted manual tranny is very limited. Thanks in advance guys.

I checked the linkages a bit but will need to remove a few things to really get a good look at them which I will do tonight. There is absolutely no fluid dripping from the seals or the bottom of the tranny. I will also drain the fluid out of it tonight to see if there is any metal in there or not, anyone have any other ideas??? Thanks for the help thus far.

I got the tranny drained last night and filtered out the fluid and found not a bit of metal shavings or anything in it. Also removed the linkages from the tranny and tried shifting it into 4th manually to no avail. My guess is gotta be something is bent internall and not broke, any ideas guys ???

On a side note i've got another question. I have heard that the internals of the 2.2 tranny work on the 2.4 and if I need to I will do this as I have access to numerous 2.2 trans and I wouldn't mind a bit lower gear ratio. My guestion though is i've also heard that the 2.2 belhousing and 2.4 belhousings can be interchanged, is this true??? If so I would just use my 2.4 polished housing and bolt up a 2.2 tranny to it. Anyone got any info regarding this???

Sounds like you toasted a shift fork.

Yes, 2.2 internals work in the 2.4, but I think there are only a couple gears you would want, not the entire internal set. I forget which gears exactly, but its like 4th and 5th gears.

does anyone happen to know if the Geo Storm tranny internals will bolt into the 2.4 housing the same way the 2.2. ones do? The idea of a bit longer first gear would be awesome and then the machined diff would be great as well.

Yes they do. I have the internals if you need them, just took the diff out of a storm SOHC tranny. It's a 1991 with 67K on it, tested @ the yard.
