97 z24 5spd transmission is toast
Wednesday, May 31, 2006 1:11 AM
hi guys, I am in a bit of a pickle. I have a 97 z24 with the manual 5 spd transmission. about a year ago I was lazy, and miss shifted going over some rail road tracks. Ground 3rd gear into oblivion. After this I was locked out of 4th gear. Parked my car and 2 days later everything magically fixed itself. The shift from 3rd to 4th was rough but it worked, no grinding. Now I find myself in a similar situation again. Comming home tonigh with a pulled hamstring, I didnt engage the clutch all the way and ground the living hell out of fourth gear. I was going 60km/hr and was driving soooo slow, but none the less toasted the gear. Now the car will not let me in any gear.

I am simply assuming my synchros are gone, and that I will probably need a new transmission. Any other opinions on what it may be would be greatly appreciated.

If it should turn out that I do need a new trany or a rebuild, I was wondering what I can expect to pay for a new tranny or a used one and where I would find one from.

Thank You For All Your Help

just did that to mine i think.... detatch the cables from the tranny and see if you can manually change the gears by hand. If you can tranny is prob OK. Still didnt figure mine out yet... but thats a start... im going to the junkyard oday to get a new shifter and cables for $50 if that ok?

so it does sound like synchros, I dont really know anything about trannys, but if it does require a rebuild am I better off just getting a new one?

hi guys, a friend of mine is a mechanic and he says that it will be cheaper to get a new transmission and put it in thaan rebuilding my old one. What I am wondering is if the five speed manual from the 97 z24 can be pulled from any other cars or motors, or is it just off of the 96-99 2.4 cavs and sunfires.

the 99+ aleros and grand ams have the Getrag....... which is a better trans....... but anyway........

sounds like the cables are bad..... if it wont let you into any of the gears, its probably not just inside the trans.
