Shifter/Tranny problem

Ok guys, this one's bugging the heck outta me. I have a 96 Sunfire GT with the 5 speed manual, and this morning I went to drive to work and it backed out of the drive way fine, shifted into first fine, started driving, went to shift to second, NOTHING. The shifter slid back into the slot for second but the engine just revved, the gear never engaged. It also did not engage 4th or Reverse, only 1/3/5 were working.

I'm guessing a shift cable broke or got bound up somewhere, what do you guys think?

take your center console out and disconnect the cable that connects to the side of the shifter, it will snap off with a little effort. have a friend move that cable in and out of the sleeve and then look under the hood to see if the gear selector is moving up and down. sounds like its broke or it snapped off the shifter or transmission(which it will do if the cable gets bound up).
