I'm sure everyone has their own little techniques and such, I'll just share some of mine.
-I hardly ever look at my tach, only if I were racing (legally on a track)
-I use my speedo, 0-15 1st, 15-25 2nd, 25-35 3rd, 35-45 4th, and above that 5th usually.
-Don't ever really downshift, just pretty much throw it in neutral when slowing down and at a stop.
How about you guys?
I drive by ear always. Its just how I do.

Pretty close to how i do it, also feel the car, and how she's doing in that gear, if it needs down shifting or not, 3rd and 4th seem to be the tricky gear, sometimes 40 is alright for 4th, sometimes it wants 3rd. Otherwise, pretty much like you. I do use the tach every now and again though, my white face gauges suck, and the needles hit the face in the morning, so i have to use which ever works, or by sound.

I rarely look at the tach. Only if I'm drag racing at the track or something will I ever look at my tach. After driving stick for a while, you can just feel when to shift.
And yeah, I always downshift when slowing down. I never downshift to first though, 2nd is the lowest I go.
As far a speeds in the gears: 1-25 in first, 25-50 in 2nd, 50-82 in third, and 82-109 in fourth. I only use fifth for cruising on the highway.

I run out just short of the rev limiter, I don't use the tach or speedo to tell me when to shift. The engine tells me what I need to know. I heel-toe shif purely out of habit from racing. I don't drag the clutch on downshifts, it's either in or it''s out. I only feather the clutch the slightest little bit from a stand still or when I'm trying to find traction on really sh*tty roads (ice, snow...) When I downshift I rev-match, and I do it all by sound and touch. It's hard to explain, but I just know what gear I need and what RPMs the engine needs to be at at any given time. I downshift before a turn and I don't shift until I'm exiting the turn so not to upset the car, and I keep the motor in the powerband as much as possible.
^^Do you actually use TRUE heel-toe? I know with the pedal arrangemnet it makes it kind of difficult. I always have to use the side of my foot instead especially since I wear size 14 shoes.

LOL... I unfortunately have to use the side of my foot, but even using the side of your foot, it's still the same method of using one foot to control the brake and gas at the same time. Most people talk about heel-toe and they refer to that technique. Doing "true" heel-toe the traditional British way, at least for me, who is 6'3", requires bending in ways that even a Yoga instructor would find disturbing. But it's all the same end result. I can do it in larger cars, though, just not the Cavy. I left-foot brake, too, but I'm a little rusty at it.
I'm begining to think my idle problems and stuff have something to do with my transmission.......When I downshift the car doesn't slow down....? anybody know?
1st gear- boost- spin
2nd gear - boost - spin- torque steer
3rd gear- boost- damn torque steer.
4th gear- rarely boost.

95% of the time though i drive really easy. i use the tach often.
after all i have 150k miles on a stock isuzu and i love the way it shifts.
mostly by sound, sometimes by the upshift light 'cause I'm trying to stretch out my mpg.
I rarely downshift. if and when I go boost, I'll pay more attention to the tach.

I glance at the tach as I'm shifting when driving around regularly. Usually right as I'm raising the clutch pedal just to see how fast the rpms drop. For whatever reason, I enjoy that. I used to drive strictly by the shift light, then I realized there was never enough power when driving like that. There's a semi-steep hill around here that I drive on everyday. Traffic goes up it at 35 mph. The shift light likes to tell me to shift into 5th. Right.

i drive mostly by ear but i can see the boost gauge sitting around 0 or some boost each gear, -10 vac crusing along in 3-4-5th gear, tap the gas on a downshift to bring the rpm up when accelerating. upshift before stalling, around 900 rpm
14.82 @ 97 mph
