wierd 1-2 upshift...
Thursday, April 20, 2006 4:38 PM
For some odd reason, I can launch the car fairly well... A dab of wheelspin and then grab... for some odd reason, however, my 1-2 upshift is total junk (or at least feels that way). When I shift, it feels as though the car bogs a bit... I can't figure out if the clutch is slipping or if the motor is just bogging... usually I get a little spin on the upshift and then bog... then it begins climbing again. I do hear a slight squeak (sounds like nails on a chalkboard) when I shift so I'm really starting to think it's the clutch. Car only has 13k on it, but I bought it with 8k and it did it a bit then too... I'm thinking perhaps the previous driver dogged it HARD... not sure though, I bought it from a dealer.

any thoughts?

1-2 Shift I think puts you a bit below the engine's powerband. More noticeable when you have a header.

really... so its somewhat normal... I'll have to check and see what RPM the 1-2 dumps me at if I shift at redline in 1st... anyone know off hand?

I dont know how the new ECOTEC's are geared, but on my tranny with the engine hitting the rev limiter (~6300 rpm) the car is still under 4000rpm in 2nd gear. I always hated that.

I have an "03 sunfire with the ECOTEC and a 5-speed and I have, just in the past week, been experiencing something similar to what you're describing. It will shift fine into 2nd, but as I push down on the gas it bogs out for half a second. This has been happening when I'm in traffic and entering 2nd at about 1600 RPM.
When it bogs, it gives that feeling you would get if you shifted from second gear to fifth.
Also at idle, my car has been stalling or sitting at 500 RPM for a few seconds.
It also stalls or idles at 500 if I'm coming up to a red light and I'm rolling with it out of gear, and then once I come to a stop, it resumes regular idle.

Any thoughts anyone? Oh yeah, this car is stock except for a k&N.

Advice? Hmmmmmm???

we figure the squealing is the serpentine belt slipping. does it on my cav, my friends 5 speed eco, and another friends auto eco.

we also think the the engine is pulling timing on hard upshifts due to some reason or another. Im going to hook up the hp tuners and check it out on the upshifts.

That could just be the ECM programming. Possibly the Torque Management program. This kicks on in the auto's before the upshift and pulls timing simply to reduce engine power, to extend transmission life. Excellent if removed.

Or possibly when you're doing a hard shift, it's registering on the knock sensor. Once it picks up what it thinks is a knock it'll pull timing. Trust me, the timing decay rate on a stock ECU sucks.
