bad tcc silinoid?
Friday, March 10, 2006 2:55 PM
it only really happens in the morning or when i first start my car for the day. i come to my first stop and my car kinda shutters or jumps a few times. if i dont give it a lil gas or shift into nuetral real quick it will stall out. any thoughts? how much it might cost to fix?

Yeah, it's your TCC solenoid going bad.
There is a fix for the problem but required the valve body to be removed, the solenoid hole bored out and then install a couple of component which will allow you to reuse the factory solenoid again.
So far, this is the only fix I've found but am doing some more research to either override the TCC or simply bypass.
If I get this information, will post it.

I got mine fixed about 2 years ago, and it was like $340 or so from AAMCO in my hick little town.

The only fix I've done with mine is to cut the brown wire of the big round connector that goes into the 4t40e transmission. It's the only brown wire in that harness.
Take the two leads of the brown wire you just cut and run them into the dash to a single pole, single throw switch.
The brown wire is what activates the TCC solenoid and what I do, is only let the TCC do it's job when I'm cruising on the highway or keeping a sustained speed above 45-500 mph.
So far I've had no problems doing this and when I'm getting off of the highway or cruising speed, just flip the switch to the off position, listen to the rpm's go up by 250rpm and all is good in 4t40e land.

I've only had the check engine come on once with the powertrain code of 0742 which is the TCC not getting recognized by the PCM. Since there is no real deleterious effect with this code, is just an annoying CEL and just erase it with my OBDII reader. The CEL has since not come on but would imagine with city driving, would be continuously going off due to the TCC wanting to come on when the PCM tells it to.

With all of the reseach I've done in the last week, going through all of the electrical schematics from the Haynes and Chiltons manuals, have evaluated that this is pretty much the only fix there is and is still in the ongoing process of full evaluation.
Believe me, I can't afford another transmission right now so this will be my primary means of keeping the car running with no real side effects on the car.

So far, so good with this and will keep everyone posted on how things go for the long haul.

It's the tcc when you can narrow it do to it only stalling when it is in drive. If the car does not stall in nuetral, but does as soon as it is in drive, then it's the tcc. Sometimes it does it only when it is cold, other times, only when it is hot. or randomly. But is it dies when in drive, but not when in nuetral, or when giving it gas, then it's probably the tcc solonoid.

Update to the tcc switch.
Everything is going great with the switch idea, no cel's, no konking out when coming off of the Interstate, and seems to be working great.
I'm a little more at ease with the car now that this is working.
If I do notice the car to be getting ready to stumble, will just flip the switch, turns off the tcc solenoid and all it good.
It's kind of a rigged way of doing things but again, would rather live with this until the money comes around for the that transmission rebuid or another tranny.
Finally, it's the only somewhat fix I've seen on the net with anything that keeps you from getting into the tranny and a feasible way to drive until more money is available.
Good luck with it.
