jus thought id find out what i should expect when being boosted, im gonna be running app. 7 psi of boost, so lets say 210-220 whp, ive got the 4 speed auto in a 1997 Z24,
am i safe to say this is gonna be safe to run,
ive already got a b/m shift plus and im gonna be installing a trans cooler as well to be on safe side
whats your input, i searched but only found a post about running upwards of 500-550 hp
thank you
My newly purchased Z was previously boosted with an rsm super kit and with 84k on the clock and is apparently on it's 3rd tranny. I just swapped the transmission out today and came to find the old fuked one was not stock but from a wrecker (assuming it's the second). Thus mine is the third.
People say these trannies can take alot of boost, but I can say i'd give that theory a 0/1 record
i think it may be the driving thats the problem... any trans is going to break if you grind gears/don't do regular lube changes/drop the clutch/wheel hop all over the place.
Its like the trans in my beetle.. everyone on the vw forums talks about how crappy it is, but i've got well over 100 drag runs on it with very little issue, making 260 lbs-ft of torque. My 1-2 synchro IS a little uncooperative but thats because I grinded the 1-2 shift a few times due to a poorly bled clutch system.

so basically as long as i dont gun it every stop light it will last quite a long time, im also doing bushings to reduce the wheel hop and stiffen it up even more
No.....boost will kill it. Gunning it isn't the issue, the auto blowing it's Sec. Clutches is the problem. I can only relay my experience, and doubt running it hard was the problem but weak trannies was.
Ask around some more, cars with long usage would give you a better idea.
210 OR so WHP realistic with what you've got YES you will be fine as long as you don't run it everyday or beat the sh!t outta it when u do drive it. Thats the same trans I have @ 5lbs of boost.
so other then the trans cooler and b.m shift plus, wut else do u recommend i buy to strengthen wut needs strengthining to run 225-250 whp reliably, thanks guys
trq converter i know, but where do u find them?
i am on my third transmission 01 boosted Z24 big boost 10psi and above. Reflashed and emanaged. The first trans was slipping once at full temp. the second trans was a rebuilt one that had the yank converter also on her. It lasted about 200 miles. Something inside broke and i did not want to dive into it. The third trans is currently working ok. I am telling you a secret by saying that ebay has good deals sometimes. I got a used 4t40e with 20k on it for 120 buckaroose. hope you dont have the luck i have had with this trans. It is an economy transmission, It is not made for power and it is one of the worst transmissions ever produced by gm . I have been told that by several certified transmission specialist.

whats involved in replacing the trq converter? is it like the old style where its fill with fluid and it slides rite off the end? or is it much different, only trans ive worked on is my dads auto in his 70 GTO, turbo 400 trans, obviously mines different, but does the trq converter remain the same idea
ive been boost at 7 PSI now for 30k miles, the only trans problems i have were related to the B&M Shiftplus. Without the trans runs perfectly fine.

you have to drop the trans and yes it is a fluid filled style that is swapable without opening up the transmission casing. I have mine still sitting here brand new if you want it. 200 miles on her . Let me know.
