Ok, I am having trouble getting the shift knob off of my 2005 Cavalier. I have tried just pulling it off and it wont budge. What exactly am I supposed to do to get this off?? And I am going to replace it with a universal shift knob, and I am thinking it will fit if I take off the lever thing that is for the safety feature going into reverse.
If you look at the front on the "neck" of the knob, you'll see a thin rectangular hole and in that hole is a clip in the shape of a stapler. just get a thin flathead screwdriver and pry it out.
On a personal note, I tried one of those universal shifters and found that it "sticks" as if I was always holding down the button, I decided to get a side button shifter that was made for older cav's and love it (check my car profile for pics). Finally, a shifter with some meat on it, and it has grooves for my fingers as well (you REALLY should check out my car profile for the pics to apreciatte what I mean)
**correction for above**
shape of a large staple, not stapler
Umm, I have a manual, and I am pretty sure I dont have the clip thing in the front of the shaft. And of course, I am going with a ball shifter since its a manual, thanks for your help though.
my apologies, for some reason I assumed it was auto. I'll do a bit of research and reply with the correct instructions
Break it. It's a press-fit. You have to snap it off.
when you say snap it off do you mean break the shaft?? i dont want to break anything. or do you mean it just snaps off if you pull it real hard, and i mean snap off as in you can snap it back on.
You have to break it. It will not go back on. Such is life.
No, twist and pull it off. It will come off without breaking it.
I put a towel around mine and then took a pair of channel locks and twisted it like no tomorrow. eh hope the helps.
Did it come off without breaking, i really dont want to break the thing, lol. So I can put the stock knob back on if I need to.
Mine didn't break, when you twist the knob it kinda like strips the inside of the knob. I just tried to put the knob back on my shifter and it went on ok, I just had to tap it down with a hammer.

ok, i will try twisting it, and see what happens... thanks for the help so far..
well, i twisted the thing like a mofo with some clamps, and it came off. but the knob i got didnt fit when the black shaft was on, so i took it off, and it had the reverse safety thing. now i have a sweet aluminum knob with a metal shaft, lol, i need my B&M Short Shifter...
