I'm just wondering if anyone else is having problems with the pass. side wheel bearing going out like every 6 months. Its on my 97 Cavalier Z24. The thing that gets me is that it drives stright, with an occasional viberation in the steering wheel. I was thinking maybe a bent half shaft or I need a wheel alinement. I would greatly appeciate any advice to my problem.
this probebly should be in the suspention and brake forum.. but to answer your question have you thought about the possiblity of balancing the wheels?? bent rim?? does this happen around a certian mph??? usually if its a wheel bering there is a loud roaring noise coming from it.
**changes are here**
Unless you have a serious alignment problem, you probably won't destroy a bearing that way. When does the vibration happen?
The viberation occurs when I'm crusing on the highway at 70 Like it viberates off and on.
i would say either you need a tire balance or check for a bent rim. the leading cause of steering wheel vibration is off balance tires. try rotating your tires and see what happens.
wheel bearing can be checked by moving the top and bottom of the wheel towards the driver side and then away .. if there is play in it, the bearing is bad.
having wider wheels or lots of excessive cornering could cause them to go out. poor brand maybe?
14.82 @ 97 mph
Sounds like a tire balance issue, although the speed is a little high for it. I doubt thats whats causing the bearing to go bad though. Are you replacing the bearing yourself or taking it somewhere? Is the axle nut torqued properly?
you cannot tell if a wheel bearing is shot by looking at it or moving it unless its REALLY gone, the CV holds it together.
another thing i would look at is a worn CV joint could cause some vibration and is not always detectable.
