99 2.4 5 speed tranny problem
Saturday, December 24, 2005 7:26 PM
I went to downshift today from 3 to 2 and shifter went in but did not catch the gear. Then drive on and find lost all 3 gears on bottom of h pattern 2,4,r. I limped home with 1,3,5 and sometimes 2 or 4 would work but mostly not. When u put the lever in on of those positions it just like it pulls itself back out ( u can see the lever moving ) . Is this just a linkage problem or worse?

Could be the cables out of adjustment... check those first as it's cheaper

if thats not the case it is probably the syncros inside the tranny>
is there any loud pop or any thing when it slips out?

have a 99 had to end up changing my tranny. I took my car to GMlong ago and they told me i would have to pay to check the tranny (which mean hours to remove the tranny) if nothing was wrong i would have to pay the cost of labor. I think it was the synchros. Because they could not help me i had to get a new tranny

It turned out I had to replace the cables and shift lever. Probably just a cable problem, but got a used cable and lever for 50.CDN. so replaced it all. Now I know it had been going bad for a while. Hope this helps someone.
