the 3t40 in your car isn't controled by the ECM other than the torque converter lockup, where as the 4t60e that is in the J body cars has ECM controlled shift points. So just bolting in a J body 4 speed won't work. However you could use a late 80's early 90's 4t60 from an H body with a J body side cover. These tranys are almost externaly identical to the 4t60e but are not ECM controlled. I would recomend the trans from a 90 88 royal or 98 regency as this is the strongest and most common of the early 4t60's, you could prolly pick one up for around 200 bucks.

WTF??? The J-cars use a 4T40E.
Mike, find a wrecked car that had the 2.2L with a 4 speed (look at the shifter) and you've got your donor car. You'll need the tranny, the shifter assembly, the PCM, and the engine bay wiring harness... the transmission mounting bracket is the same for all autos (totally different for manual trans).
He's right thats the better way forgot j bodies don't have to have the key, ecm, and bcm kept together.

No GM car does... you can reprogram them.
