NO they are NOT the same. The Bell housing AND the gearing is different.

a possibly of your problem is similar to a problem I had and it was the gear Nut. Loosened up. Tighten it up and you should be golden, except make sure you re-pinch the nut or get a new nut from a dealership or gmpartsdirect.

Chad: I would guess one of your shift cables gave out.

I had the same thing happen to me ...twice My '99 2.4's shift cables run underneath the header flange and over time the outside plastic/rubber melts into the cable sheath freezing the cable, and if you try to shift the cable just ends up throwing a loop of cable out the side of the sheath. Making it feel like it's moving, but all your doing is bending the cable.

I found that this issue can be lessened somewhat by wrapping some reflective heat tape around the prone section of cable.

Anyways.. That's my guess, and having the gear grind also falls into the same cause because if the sheath is starting to melt into the cable, and you try to shift simi-fast or if your a new driver and don't know what to feel for (..you know that slight feeling you get when you start to put the shifter into a higher gear and you feel the shifter resist, then want to slip in). If that cable wasn't allowed to go at it's own pace then it probably just bent and looped the shift cable putting the gear in half way causing the grind.

...It happened to me.

Start there, I guarantee that's the issue. Especially if you have over 50k miles.

Let us know how it goes.
