That would just change the length of the actual shifter, not change the throw

The handle and shifter are different parts.

Shortening the length does shorten the throw

Think of it like a pendulum on a clock. It takes longer to reach the side at the bottom of it than at the middle. Although its not a 'true' short throw shifter it does shorten throws.

Shortening the length of the shaft above the pivot does not change the length of the throw (no matter how many people say it does). It does, however, change the distance that your hand moves (less). I built one for my car, since there isn't one available- here it is. The best place to change the distance of the throws is on the transmission end. By shortening the arms where the cables attach, you can drastically reduce throws.

ok, i compared the length of the b&m shifter and my stock one when i installed my new shifter and the lenght after the pivot ball is exactly the same......so taking a hacksaw to your stocker is exactly the same as the B&M shifter.....i wish i didn't throw away the 130 bucks for the same thing as a cut stock shifter........oh well, at least it looks cool

ok, but then if you hacksaw your b&m it would shorter the throw over on top of under the pivot ball !!! so its like..x2!!! isn't it?

you need to lengthen the bottom part, under the ball...... cut 2" from the top half, and weld 1" onto the bottom half.......

but i never saw a difference between my b&m and my stock shifter after the pivot......mabey i need an eye exam, or mabey memory is a bitch because it has been over a year, but i could have sworn that they are the same after the ball

and i though about cutting my b&m shifter, but then i'd have to rethread it for the knob and stuff

if i get around to it i'll go to the junkyard and grab a shifter and compare it

I think the B&M is clearly slightly longer under the ball here.

i had my stock shifter cut very short.........your hand moves less, but engaging the gears is the same........The B&M is a short shifter and DOES shorten up the @!#$ing..... ALOT.... it also stiffens up the assembly so that its not so sloppy........worth every cent i payed for it.....

yep, your right, im wrong.........hmm, i could have sworn they looked the same, oh well

either way, if you don't want to spend the cash, cutting your stock shifter isn't a bad idea

but the b&m is better

just to clarify for you guys that cant read

he says cut and reweld meaning.......cuts some off the handle and then cut some off the bottom then were you cut the stuff of the bottom weld in the stuff you cut off from the top then weld the bottom back on

thus creating a real short throw shifter
Re: DIY short throw shifter

well if he did that im sure it would work just as good as any other short shifter
