i like a firm shift, but it feels like mine is too stiff (99 z24 5m). WHen i get in the car in the morning, it feels like it just doesnt want to go into gear, and it is a little tough to put it into reverse. after driving a few blocks though, all is well. also, the car will sometimes not let me put my car into 3rd after coming out of second, but if i wait a few seconds, and give it a few more nudges it goes.. it almost feels as if there is a safety switch on the gate like there is on some cars (or all im not quite sure) so you dont accidentally put it into reverse...
anybody know what that could be? thanks, guys.
Yah mine pretty much glides by reverse when i'm downshifting from 5th, helps out sometimes. But with the shifter being to stuff, I'd check your fluid for one. Make sure the level is O.K. Also if the wrong type of fluid is fitted inside the trans, it can react wierd in shifting. GM spec fluid is AC Delco Sycnromesh(bought at GM only). I've also seen/try'd Pennzoil's version(Also called syncromesh). I didn't find it as smooth to shift, so i switch back to ac delco.
Another problem could be the linkage. The shifter cables get corroded and make shifting stiff. A good way to determind if its the trans its self or the linkage would be to disconnect the shifter cables from the tranny. It's pretty straight forward, Follow the cables to the tranny(just under the brake master cylinder(that area). The cables just pop off.
once disconnected you'll know for sure which is your problem
B & M synthetic trickshift is the best. Really smooth shifting.
