Ok.. My g/f's sunfire is shifting sloppily, basically staying in first gear way too long. My first idea is a maladjusted throttle-valve cable (aka. kickdown cable)... does this year of car even have a cable like that? (1997 2.4L) My trans am has one, where you just press in this mechanical button, open your throttle wide open and let go of the button, and it adjusts it so it kicks down when you're at WOT... is it the same on the 97 sunfire?
Second is possible fluid change.. that's easy... brown fluid = needs fluid change. no biggie.
Give me your input guys. (and girls if there are any here.. )

3 speeds do, 4 speeds shouldnt...electronically shifting transmission.
if the fluid is brown, its prob slipping. fluid is burnt and prob needs a flush to get all the crap out.. like in the torque converter as well as the radiator and tranny pan.
once the maintainence is done, look into an autotrans interceptor or b.m shift plus to firm up shifts.
no it wont have a kickdown cable its all electronic. i would say change the fluid to if not it could be a shift solenoid. do you have a CEL on at all?
I think you meant SEL light? And if so, yes it comes on occasionally. Haven't been able to get it scanned yet though. I'll persuade the wife to get that fluid changed.. well.. I'll be doing it, she needs to buy the crap for it.. LOL
So.. no cable... I was thinking there wasn't, which is why I am here asking to make sure. So things to look at are fluid, codes in the computer... anything else?
look into the two things i mentioned. firms up the shifts.
yes listen and learn from Event hes is almost god haha
nope.... just a common dude among other dudes....and dude-ettes
very knowledgeable common haha
not sure if the wife wants to make any performace upgrades.. she just wants it back to what it was before... but if thats the only way to get it, then so be it
