I see alot of reference here to different models of transmission, but i have no idea what you guys are talking about, can anyone list what the model numbers are for the different trannies, their compatibility and the pro's and cons of each?
Eh... well, there's the Isuzu 5-speed, which was used in the 95-99 Cavalier and Sunfire... had different gear ratios for the 2.2L/2200 and 2.4L motors. I imagine the 2.3L gearing was the same as the 2.4L, but I'm not sure on that.
The "Isuzu" is kind of a misleading name. The design was Isuzu, but the build was GM, so of course the General cheaped out and replaced the stronger forged metal parts in the Isuzu design with cheaper powdered metal parts that are prone to failure upon applying gobs of power. Or slicks
There's the Getrag 5-speed, which was used in the 00-05 cars. Same deal, different gear ratios for the 2.2L (pushrod aka 2200) and the 2.4L, I know for a fact the FDR is the same for the 2.4L as the Ecotec 2.2L, so I assume the gears are identical. The bellhousing is different between all three.
For automatics, there's the three speed (aka the 3T40) and the four speed (aka 4T40E). I've never seen a 3 speed, but I'm told it's vacuum controlled. The 4 speed is electronic controlled.
