I own a 96 chev cav with a 2.2 and 4sp auto w75,000mi. I am experiencing intermittent transmission problems with the od. I am pulling code p1887. My scanner doesn't really tell me much just that it is a circuit failure with the tcc solenoid. I stopped by a local shop and they told me to try looking for cut wires or try swapping a external switch? They told me that it would have the problem all the time if it was internal. It seems to happen only under load/up hill... I don't believe them at all and don't want to pay them for their time swapping parts. Does anyone have any idea what the culprit is? Could it be caused from abuse (I have a turbo and I run 5-6psi) or just age? The car sits for extended periods of time since it is my winter car I'm just starting to drive it again since my summer car is broken too.... Any help/info on fixing would be greatly appreciated since I don't trust many local mechanics.

I forgot to add that it doesn't seem to slip at all. I still have nice firm shifts. When the problem occurs the transmission simply downshifts and the check engine light comes on. When I clear the code the light stays out until it is under load in top gear.

i had the same problem. The 4T40-E's are widely known for this problem. the problem is the pump seal. it has a leak. the ses would come on anytime it wanted but usually under a load when the tcc is about to unlock. the only fix is the pull the pump and replace the seal. i think what happens is its lossing line pressure and theres not enough to keep the tcc applied and it slips. then the computer sees the tcc slip speed is to high and sets the code. until you get it fixed heres what you can do. everytime the codes comes on put it in neutral and shut the car off for a second or two. start it back up and the tcc will apply again. the light stays on but you get better gas milage. thats bassically the only fix. good luck. hope this helped.

What kind of damage could occur if not fixed immediately?
Could this happen due to low level of transmission fluid?
I recently changed the left half shaft and seal, in the process some fluid leaked but not sure how much. After this i started to notice the p1887 DTC on the highway (in 4th gear).
