So I've got a tranny temp sensor, from Jason's GP. It says in the instructions, that I need to "braze" the brass fitting onto the pan. I thought that the pan on the tranny was stamped steel. Can I do that? I didn't think you could weld brass to steel. Or can I get away with the fitting and a nut on the other side of the pan? Obviously put some sealant around the fitting, but mount it that way, instead of welding, or brazing, it.
So, my questions are,
1- How thick is the tranny pan on a 4T40E? Just stamped steel, or is it a thicker aluminum?
2- Can I get away with some sealant, and a nut to hold the fitting on the pan?
I may not know much about cars, but I know two things....

You don't need to tap the pan....I have a tranny temp gauge on my 4t40e and all you need to do is look on the front of the tranny where the coolant lines go into it....there is a bolt just below I believe that you take out and put the sensor in place....the fitting is the same size as the bolt in there right now...

Just make sure that when you put the sensor in that you do if quick cause ull start leaking tranny fluid when u take the bolt out....and if u dont see it keep looking cause its there....
Is the gauge u got an autometer??

Nice. I couldn't get my camera to take a decent pic. Oh well. Anyways, 97cavie24l, it's pretty easy to find. Crawl under the front of the car, and look at the transmission. Where the coolant lines go in, right below it is a 10mm plug. Pull that plug, and pop in the sensor. Nice and easy.

Damn! Wasted a post. Forgot to put my NEW problem in.
Now that I have the whole thing hooked up, it won't work. I have the 12V switched power going to the proper pole. I have the sensor wire going to the proper pole, and I have the ground wire run to the tranny ground, where the wire strap is for ground. But the guage won't work. It doesn't move at all. I've double checked all the wiring, and still nothing. The only thing I can think of is that I have the 12V switched power run in series to both my tranny temp and my oil pressure ( I don't have the oil guage hooked up yet.) Would that be enough to cause a problem, or do you think the guage is fragged?

its either a power or ground problem , unless the gauge or sender is bad ??

My gauge went completely dead...so I sent it back and they sent me a new one even with a whole new wiring harness and stickers....but its an Autometer

what is your average temp range on your tranny? @ 60?

anyone know where a good spot to mount the sending unit on a TH125?? i doubt my car has a plug by the cooler lines

I may be wrong, but I thought you COULD braze brass to steel. Definitely can't WELD it, but you SHOULD be able to braze. And since brazing involves lower temps than welding, the stock pan should'nt warp if the brazing is done correctly. The joining surfaces need to be clean as hell though, its even a good idea to very lightly sand the surfaces to be brazed with very fine sandpaper or emery cloth.
Mine mounted where bobby's is. 1/4 NPT I believe.....
