HELP: How to Take-apart an ISUZU?
Wednesday, April 06, 2005 12:48 PM
Ok, i bought a used 5 speed 2.4 isuzu fromt the wreakres and i'm trying to open it up to see if everything looks ok inside. I've taken all the 14mm bolts from around the bell housing, i took off those 10mm bolts on top that hold that little cover and i took off the Shifter plate, it seperated apart about 1 cm between housings, i can see inside, but it just wont seperate completly, its like something is snaged, did i forget something?

Also take off the 3 brass looking bolts that are on the upper side of the case. There should be little balls inside each hole.

yeah you have to take out the bolt that goes into the reverse gear, and remove all 4 of the detent balls/springs that hold the shift levers in place.

you also have to remove 5th gear and synchro from the case in order to lift it off.

VTLoki did a nice how-to with pics, etc a while back.

Here it is..just a little search.

sounds like a lot of work how hard is it to rebuild my tranny if the 3rd gear syncro is out?

remove the tranny.

Open it up.

Take the input shaft and have 4th gear and the bearing pressed off, or use a gear puller.

Then you have access to the synchro, replace it and press the gear and bearing back on and rebuild the tranny.

It is a lot of work, and is cheaper to get a used tranny if you plan on paying a shop to do it.

I just finished installing my limited slip, not too bad to get it all apart...going back together is a lot easier. just make sure you keep it all clean.

Where is a good aftermarket source to get things like the bearings and seals and other little parts for the Isuzu 76mm trans. Also are there upgraded syncros available, or other stronger internals, or is the only way to source the Isuzu trannys in a junkyard? The only problem i have with that is you usually have to buy the whole trans, and that seems like a waste for only a few gears.

I was planning in buying one of the brand new MK7 trans off ebay and then upgrading the diff to the older stronger one and installing a team greem LSD i have and having everything cryotreated, including the case.

I figure that would make things about as strong as they can be, and im thinking about changing some of the gear ratios maybe to that 3.27 first and fiero 3.35 FDR and make a close ratio setup like some else had posted.

Would make the power band on a built 2.2 alittlle more usable i think.

had a local shop send my internals to cryocon (www.cryocon.com) and they cryotreated the input + output gearshafts with the gears and stuff on them and the ring gear for $140 (I'm assuming the shop I had send it off for me had some markup on that too)

that is before shipping of course, not that shipping cost much either. still waiting on everything to come together before I can say how well things are working...

Does anyone know what they do to cryotreat? Do they just dip it in liquid nitrogen for a few minutes, or is there more to it? Just wondering, because I happen to have a good source for liquid nitrogen...a free source.

Craig,

IM me tonight and remind me to foward you the email I got from 300below. From what I can remember it is a day long process in which the slowly bring the part temp down to about 300 below, then slowly bring the parts back to room temp. This is supposed to align the structure of the part making it more uniform
