What rings for performance pistons (2.2ohc)
Monday, January 16, 2006 9:11 PM
Ive torn apart my motor for rebuild and am using the badger race pistons at standard bore. the block has been stone honed and cylinder bore checked. just wondering what rings will match the quality of the pistons. thanks.

knew it wouldn't be long before somone posted those... first, we're talking a 2.2 OHC not oHV, so i'm not sure if those will fit properly.... secondly, total seal rings are great for motors that are rebuilt often, like full race engines, but the people i've talked to that have run them, after about 10-15K they tend to lose compression and sometimes seal WORSE than stock rings....

JbodyPerformance is WAAAAAAAAY over priced on those rings. They are charging $324 for a set of those TS1 Gapless rings for the 2.2 ohv. I paid $150 for those gapless rings for my 1999 2.2 two years ago....and mine had to be a custom set.

can anyone verify this.......... My buddy has a mustang and he knows several people that use these rings on there motors and some over over 40k on the clock with the rings and nothing wrong yet.......

coming from scarab I would probably say its pretty accurate.. I knew there was a reason I didn't like total seal rings.

The only people who I have heard complain about Total Seal rings were guys with Honda motors. But alot of them also use stock rings on their built motors.

Thanks steve... lol.... don't give me too much credit though.

A buddy of mine ( a certified Dodge tech, who I went to school with) blew up to 2.0 DOHC motor in his 97 Neon R/T.... he grabbed a 2.4L DOHC core engine from his shop, rebuilt it with 11:1 pistons, forged rods, ported the head, wicked cams, the whole 9 yards. He was running low 14's and trapping as high as I trap in the beetle (kept breaking axles on hard launches, so never really got to see what it would do with a decent 60' time)... He used total seal rings, and i ran into him toward the end of the season this year and he told me that he was going to redo it again with stronger standard type rings because he was slowly losing compression, and when he would spray some oil into the cylinder, it would come back (telltale sign of a ring sealing issue). He's the only specific example i could give you from firsthand experience, but I have heard of this problem before on some other boards i'm on/had been on in the past (honda and mazda specifically).... It COULD just be bad install/insufficient honing, but it something I've heard of often enough where its not an issue i'd be willing to take chances with if it was intended to be a street engine. Pulling and engine, disassembling, and re-ringing are no small task for your average enthusiast, and generally when you've done it once, and dumped a load of money into it, you try to avoid doing it a second time.

Thats what I know, take it for what its worth. If anything, I recommend just looking into them a little more and seeing what long term results others have had.

if you tore your engine apart, did you notice how there was no cam in the head? hopefully u just missed the V and hit C on accident... cuz yea

when was there a 2.2 OHC? I've heard of the 2.0 OHC... not a 2.2 tho as far as I (and the lil drop down menu on the org) know of, the OHC never went beyond 2.0 liters. Maybe I missed something.. but i'm pretty sure Ron meant 2.2 ohv and jay typoed

ya i always for some reason call the ohv an ohc and never thought much about it, and no im not a retard i know where the cam is because unfortunately i have seen the inside if the motor a few to many times, anyway i went to talk to a very smart man today who builds circle track race motors and he said not to use total seal rings on a street driven car unless i want to burn oil. I showed him one of my pistons and connecting rods, and instantly he told me my timing was too advanced based on wear marks on the rod bearings. i asked about my broaken rings and cracked piston and he told me the piston cracked forcing the rings to also let go. SOOO long story short im going with the standard bore badger performance pistons, standard oem type rings, replacement rod bearings, arp rod hardware, and will keep the boost below 11 psi without an msd.
let me know how that sounds. Thanks guys
