T3/T4, what is my best choice of size
Monday, January 09, 2006 8:19 AM
Alright turbo map gods....I need to decide on a turbo, and I cannot figure out how to read a compressor map. BUT, I do need to figure out what size of turbo I want. I do know I want a t3/t4, I dont mind if it doesnt spool until about 2800 rpms, but I want to be able to achive 18lbs of boost, which shouldnt be a problem wtih a t3/t4. The motor has some head work done and the motor is FULLY built. And I have some ford 370cc injectors for when it was on 8psi, but i have some 510cc injectors when the new turbo is in and I want to tune it for the 18psi. The previous turbo was a ss autochrome pos and it took a crap. I need a new turbo and I want to know what my best options are, and I know there are a lot of smart people on here that know more about compressor maps than I do and you people can give some great adivise, I would appreciate it tons. Thnak you! p.s. I was thinking about this one, do you think taht is a little too big?

Garrett T3/TO4E 60 trim w/ .63 a/r

hum let see : "And I have some ford 370cc injectors for when it was on 8psi, but i have some 510cc injectors when the new turbo is in and I want to tune it for the 18psi".

You know that Psi mean nothing else than an amount of pressure. Psi mean nothing else than that. You can't choose your injectors nor the maps for a number of psi. Find out how much power you want then ask for Maps or injectors.

You do understand that you will need bigger injectors than that unless you bring the fuel pressure really really high or run more than 4 injectors.. 510cc injectors are not even big enough (at 43.5psi fuel pressure) for an N/A engine. I don't know where you took your number but it seems that you need more reading about boost and tuning.

Also, if you really want to run that amount of power, you need enough knowledge to AT LEAST read and understand the turbo Maps and choose properly your turbo.

Btw, you cn run 18psi with a T25 so stop asking question with an amount of psi. Go with Hp numbers and read a bit more about boost. Asking a question like this and running that number of Hp, you'll soon be pulling the engine out.

You don't seem to know enough to run that kind of power. Sorry but it's the way it is, you need to learn, not get everything from everybody.

not sure about your power goals, but some guys on this site use turbos close to that size and put down decent whp, psi really means nothing I agree, a larger turbo with same "psi" creates way more cfm and produces different power. there is a thread on here tat has the compressor maps, and you can go from there.

scroll down about 2/3 and just peak at those, turbos are hard to learn, every little bit of info can help

Well, I know it really means nothing to you, but i know how much i am running not(or how much boost i WAS running), and how much i want to run, i was running 7-8 lbs of boost when the ss autochrome pos took a Sh*t, but i want to run around 18 lbs of boost, and hopefully get somewhere near 320 hp, I know there will always be some doubters, but...its will happen trust me, I wasnt gonna even post ANYTHING about my plans until it was finished and dynoed, but the turbo took a crap and I decided to ask you guys the best turbo for my applications. It will be mostly a strip car, so i'm not worried about getting out of vaccum at 1500 rpms on take off. Thanks

TO4E 50 trim, is a nice big turbo, might spool pretty late though, just from looking at numbers, no experience with that turbo. I used a garrett 'super60' and it worked really well on my last car, but for your HP gains, might wanna get something a little bigger IMO.

I suggest a T3/TO4E 50 trim with a .63 a/r turbine.

Skilz, does this one seem alright to you?
.47 trim Compressor Wheel, a .70 A/R Compressor Housing, a .63 A/R Turbine Housing

I REALLY need to do some reading on what all of the a/r's mean, cuz I am pretty knoledgable about the rest of the system, but damn, these turbo dimentions are tearing me apart...lol....where is a good place to learn, sad part is....I need to find a turbo FAST.....motor is out....

Yep i would say the same or a 58 trim... My old man did all these calculations for my 2.4L and thoughs turbos i believe, put me right up the center of the Turbo map... so like %80+ effeiciency rate, very nice to keep temps lower....
But with the s/c'er it changed it and i needed the 60 trim but that a different topic

So i would say go with the 50 or 58 trim hybrid and you will love it... and if your getting it new buy it from ATP turbo Very good customer servise

I've never heard of a 58 trim T3/T4 of any sorts.

Well folks, thanks, I have decided to go with a t3/t4 hybrid 57 trim .60 a/r compressor .63 a/r turbine, it should suite my needs nicely, thanks, I'll post a LONG LONG post when the project is complete, should be pretty quick, I would like to have it COMPLETELY done by graduation (May), and my dad would like to see it done soon also, as he is helping with the whole thing. Motor will be back in and running in a couple weeks, probably running just around 8 lbs of boost, then i will finish off the interior, and then get back to work on the 18lbs of boost(dont worry, motor is bulletproof), and if I cant get it perfectly tuned, I am going to send it off to Monkey Wrench Racing. Now that the SAFC is all good, I should be good to go. THanks again, Adios

57 trim is a good choice, they spool; very well even on the smaller 1.8T engine that i'm familiar with, and I've seen 1.8Ts run 24 psi on them and make 350 or so whp

Well taht is good to hear, I spoke to an org memeber, he said as soon as he got on it, it was boosting, and he hit full boost around 3000 rpms, 8lbs of course, I wonder how many rpms it will be winding until she hits 18 lbs, who knows, Guess I'll find out.
