exhaust cut out- opinions pls
Saturday, January 07, 2006 11:00 AM
so far except for my header my car has a completely stock exhaust system. I dont really want to do a full exhaust cause i hate how 4 bangers sound. I like my quiet stock exhaust. So i figured the next best thing would be an exhaust cutout. I havent heard much about them though. I know what they are and how they work. But where should i put it? If i put it before the cat wont it throw codes? Also what kind the most reliable? Ive seen electric ones for 200 bucks and simple manual ones for 50 bucks. Are they prone to leaks and breaking? Whats the best company to buy one from?

Okay ......

First.... my opinion on the set up is GREAT IDEA.............................

Now for cut out options .........

the electric one works great....... breaking down ??? never heard of it leaking ....

I think the company was called ATP.... they offer a boost oriented cut out ..... it has a wastegate type actuator that when it sees boost ... it opens..... haha I think it's kind of cool ...... for turbo ..... because our boost isn't linear and doesn't go up as the RPMs do ....

as far as location ....... put it before the cat..... it shouldn't throw codes unless your driving around town with the cut out open which equals you having NO exhaust..... so if it's just for track use and playing around ....... you'd want to put it before the cat......

if you put it behind the cat.... don't bother getting one ....... and get a nice 3" full exhaust even though you don't like how they "sound".........................

The cut out is a great idea .... do it ....... BEFORE THE CAT..... you'll love it ...... instant boost in performance....

a had a 3" electric cutout right off my downpipe, it was awsome and i would definatly recomend one. never had any problems with it, and it seemed to seal just fine

just curious does anyone have any sound clips of what an exhaust cutout sounds like on an LD9?

get a nice resonator and a 3 inch summit muff and your car will sound stock. i think boosted 2.4s anyways have a real nice bark to them, not like a whiny honda.

see thats just it, they dont have a bark to them. To be totally honest ive never heard a cavalier exhaust besides stock that i would put on my car. They are all just to raspy for my taste.

I personaly wouldnt do this with a GM supercharger... you wont gain any thing.... actually it will feel slower off the line...

My car was ALOT quicker off the line it felt like with the stock exhaust but no top end

then i put on the RK sport 4-2-1 header and it still felt quick off the line just not as fast with all stock, but my top end was getting nicer

then i put on the full 2.5" header back exhaust and all my power i had with the stock exhaust off the line went out the window... but top end was SWEET!

I couldnt imagine how bad the off the line would be with a cut out on this set up....

that just my 2cents and personal experience...

I now have the 3" exhaust with the cut out that Derek Z24 was talking about (it bought it off of him) but i also have a turbo as well so i dont its a bit different for me

right click and save as.

That video was about 2 days after my engine was finished and the car had full interior.... engine prolly had less than 70 miles on it total.... stock tb and pacesetter header with open downpipe and nothing else....... not the best audio clip but it should give you a general idea.......
