i know money and speed go hand in hand,but how much could you get away with spending on a custom turbo kit??? after i get my z24 next week ill be saving and buying a part at a time,and im not messing around with bolt ons,im going to start piecing together my turbo kit,how much could i get away with spending?
you could build the turbokit itself for 1000 or less.
as far as engine management, if you dont run megasquirt with edis, you might as well not turbo your car. everything else is a bandaid hack
you know Its funny you bring this up. I dont usually reply to the "so I dont relly plan on buying a turbo but If I were going to thread" but this reminds me of a guy whos sole purpose was to see how cheap he could get his turbo kit. I think he capped at like 800 for 5psi it was the funniest thing. rising rate fmu old junkiee boost guage. old turbo old mani. cheap charges no intercooler. it was so great.

I originally spent about $800 for a peak boost of 6 psi at 2700 rpm which I would drop to 4 psi at 5500 rpm due to stock injectors being so small.
Turbo = $30... "strip a car for $30 day"
Turbo Sunbird ECM = same as above
Junkyard turbo Sunbird exhaust for T25 flange (same as above)
Complete exhaust = $300 (high flow cat, dynomax muffler, custom bent piping)
Custom bent intake piping = $25 (bent while installing exhaust)
Miscellaneous rubber hose connectors and big K&N air filter at the junkyard = $15
Second trip to junkyard for more hoses
= $10
New aluminum V6 radiator = $120
Hoses, overflow bottle to convert to V6 radiator = $30
Junkyard Cavalier exhaust manifold to cut and weld = $30
Ebay adjustable FPR = $50
Miscellaneous "parts" such as new IAT, hose clamps, PCV hoses, oil return hoses, = about $140
Total = $750
'Course if I'd spent more time collecting parts I could have saved more $$ initially.
I also installed a used '95 engine about a year before the turbo swap, which cost $300. Since the turbo install I've spent the following:
Silicone hose connector = $15
2001 2.2 starter = $30
T25 rebuild kit = $90 (Ebay)
Injectors = $60 (4 plus 1 spare)
Stock Delco plugs for 99 or 2k 3800?? (they're NGK iridium in a Delco box) $22
head gasket plus new bolts = $40 (turned the timing up too far one winter day)
rod bearings= $10
1993 oil pump = $37 (to fix low oil pressure at idle from above mistake)
Total additional = $304
I've driven the car really hard for about 2 years. I'm at almost 8 psi non intercooled now and I feel I've proven that a "budget" turbo can be done and it will live if tuned correctly (timing control is absolutely necessary). This car actually uses 87 octane fuel. Now I'm building a better head, I'll be working on a new short block eventually, and I've got a T3 (freebie) and intercooler (hand me down from another car) so I can make a little more power. It's the long way around, but I got the car boosted quick (2 weeks from initial install) and I've had plenty of fun while evaluating just what parts are necessary to build the next engine.

thanks for the input slowolej,sounds like a budget scream you have there
was that you? do you still have the picks the boost guage was greatit was so clunky

who cares, my first turbo kit costed me 345 dollars complete.
i have pics if you guysd wanna see the craziness. hhaha
kowledge will do much more for you than money, remember that.

damn you guys need to hook me up lol
I did my whole setup for $1000.00
wow these are some impressive prices!
But there is no way I would turbo my car with an intercooler. ( I see that most had them tho)

BFG Drag Radials
Saab Turbo kit
2.5 exhaust, w/cutout
Spec Stage 2+ Clutch
I spent about 1700 bux for my setup and that includes everything custom made, but I bought everything brand new, and I bought Greddy Emanage twice practically....
Mike, if you buy all the stuff I can fab the whole kit for you....not hard at all...I even have some stuff laying around that I am sure you could use...

2K for a new motor, tranny, and supercharger with wiring harness and ecu, set only had 22K miles on it.

Nope, not me. No boost gauge in the car. I have one that I bought at an electronics surplus place for $6 but I kind of like keeping the old 2nd gen VL stock interior all stock.

I'd guess either a junkyard find engine+turbo or someone who boosted, blew it up, and got frustrated. Am I close?
The "2 weeks to completion" was 2 weeks of long nights after work and weekends at the shop. And I've spent soooo much time driving around tuning with the laptop installed that it's not even funny. In general you can save time or $$ but rarely both.

Turbo came off an SVO in a junkyard (found out after installation that the oil seals were a little shot...but it still worked
) Capped off an old 2.0L 'loggish' manifold and welded a T3 flange to it for the turbo mani (old school, yo). 1G DSM BOV from a junkyard (although I still haven't found an alternative that sounds nearly as nice). Charge pipes were made from old radiator hoses and chopped up pipes I had laying around (pic in reg). rrfpr used off ebay.
