Working on Custom Turbo Kit.
Saturday, December 24, 2005 9:22 PM
hey guys..i need some help and opinions on what i am going to do..i plan on getting the Fully Built Crate Motor from JBP that the major work is the 5 angle valve job, 9:1 Compression, .04 over bore, etc.....which involves getting the new axles from the drive shaft shop, the bigger fuel pump, bigger injectors, etc again..all necessary components...i plan on running Greddy E-manage along with the set up and all the necessary electronics...now the questions come along...i want to run a 3" exhaust all the way so should i buy the turbo that has a 3" outlet? and also...i want to be able to run 2.5" piping on the intercooler piping so is it posible to be able to do the 2.5" piping but then the 3" exhaust from the turbo back? if so which turbo would support that..I know this will end up spendin some pennies but im looking forward to it...i want to be able to run a t3/t4 turbo if that helps..ANY Opinions would be great.. I'm still learnin about everything that involves turbo so all you who are experianced and wish to help me i'd greatly appricate it..Thanks!

01 2.4 Cavalier
intake, polyurathane engine and tranny mounts, header all the way back exhaust, short shifter.

Yes.

if so which turbo would support that..

On the intercooler side (compressor side) you would get a coupler that goes from one size on one side and increases on the other side. They are called "transition couplers". Here is an example of one... 2" to 2 1/2".

On the exhaust side, you would use a flange made for T3 style turbo and to the size that you want. This is more than likely what you'll need: Steel - T3 Discharge External WG - Weld On 3"

Find out what trim the turbo is before you buy it. There are different trim T3/T4 turbos...you don't want to buy one that is too big and that spools way too slow for your needs.

If you have anymore questions, just ask.

If you are looking at a fully built motor, a 60 trim T3/T4 would be a great choice.

The link didn't work...

Power #s are a mystery...every car is different and it all depends on your setup, what turbo you get etc etc.

If you need help finding parts, you can ask on here or ask me privately. I'm personally almost done with my turbo setup...just buying the little stuff right now.

60 Trim is a big turbo. Are you putting this turbo on before or after the valvetrain work?

This Turbo Will Be Put on After all the valvetrain work. The Turbo Kit will go on after i recieve my fully rebuilt motor from JBP.

also, JBP says they can reflash my ECU...so should i get a Reflashed ECU and then Attached Greddy Emanage or Megasquirt or just attech one of them to the stock ECU?

Hmm... a 60 trim is still big...I mean, the picture in my signature is a 50 trim and that's a big sucker and I have a rebuilt head as well with upgraded camshafts. I would say shoot for a 50 trim. Have you looked at the CFM charts on them?

That turbo would be more geared for high end power and higher RPMs unless you're really able spool that turbo good enough.

It's been talked about in the performance forum but I don't trust it...

well i read those forums NJHK and the 4th one was a little bit more interesting than the the rest...when i asked JBP about the reflash they told me that they have extras in stock and that when they send me my motor they would send the flashed ecu and i would send my stock motor back and my stock ecu..but this is all where it comes down to..if i plant o do all these mods there is no point to doing it if i cant get passed 108 on the track..its going to be kind of hard to drag with this problem about an ECU not being solved.

About the turbo, would you suggest any Twin Ball bearing Turbos for my car?

That is somewhat true but you would be in the low 13s area to trap over 108. That topic is a little taboo around here so I'm not going to get into it much around here.

Ball Bearing...it's nice to spool up incredibly fast. I'd say do more research on Ball Bearing turbos, I don't want to give my opinion on it and sway you back and forth between ball bearing and non-ball bearing.

my friend on his hatchback has a T28 Dual Ball Bearing turbo...his is pushing over 300 whp on a SOHC Civic Hatch..let me tell you, his car is a beast..i have never felt so much pull in my life..he is spooling from 2000 rpms all the way to redline and its just amazing how much torque he has....

Now say i have a regular t3/t4 turbo on my car and spool about 3500 rpms or maybe even 4000 rpms...if we raced he would be pulling harder than i would cause of lower spooling but if i changed that turbo to a dual ball bearing? it would make a difference in my opinion.. Say i go with a Dual Ball Bearing Turbo..will a Dual Ball Bearing Turbo match up with what i want to do like 2.5 charge pipes and then the 3" exhaust from the turbo back?

You've got to consider the differences in engine displacement and CFM, as well as the turbos. That ball bearing is about twice what a T3/T4 costs, and spools instantly. If you want to beat your friend, check out the infamous Disco Potato. The GT28 RS

Or if you still want a quick spooling turbo without spending $1K for a damn hybrid turbo, try a T3 turbo with regular journal bushings.
