Some M62 info
Wednesday, December 21, 2005 7:09 AM
Just thought I would drop some info, keep all who are intrested entertained lol. The kits will prob not be much for low boost. The M62's seem to produce a desent amount of boost for large pullies. 8lbs might be as low as the kits will be able to go, but I am tryin to have it as low as 6 lbs. As soon as I find out the stock crank pulley size I can give more definate answers. As of now the highest level of boost that can be had safely on he charger is 15 lbs. 18 lbs can be done but that is really pushing the safety level of the charger, so I will not offer it at all. I am tryin to reconfigure the bypass valve right now, in order to keep the charger mounted how I want. I still do not have a definate manifold design due to this. Once that is either sorted or I accept that the charger has to be mounted differently I will move on to a definate manifold design. I am tryin to keep this mounting so an intercooler is a possibility, so I am workin out the bugs now. So there is progress, unfortunately more on paper then anything else.

Little side note I forgot, an M62 @ 15lbs flows just about double the CFM of an M45 @ 10lbs

i honestly dont think an intercooler is gonna be needed with it. Its such a big charger and pushes so much air, i doubt an intercooler would do much at all for performance.

The GTP guys are gettin around to a 50hp gain to 80 hp gain with the M90's. Thats pretty much the driving force behind making them.

I'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree on this one.

gm uses a intercooler on the cobaltss/sc and redlines , and they use a M62

also the grand am cup cars are running 18-20 psi with them

@ 6500 rpms with a 2.8" pulley the blower spins @ around 14,800 rpm, which is relatively 18lbs of booost. Only problem is the max speed you are supposed to push the blower is 14,000 rpm's. I dont think in a street trim the blowers would last too well being overdriven that much. Doesnt mean you cant do it though, just means I dont wanna offer a street kit that high. I bassically dont wanna be liable if the blower wears out much faster then should.

Yeah, can't agree with you on this. I know the GTP guys say the best mod they can get is a intercooler.

Can't wait to guinnea pig for this project.

Fats... if the intercooler is gonna be a probelm, dont forget we can always do teh water/alky injection route to get hte same results. Keep that in the back of your mind.

Oh wait your hmfd on this board... whatever lol

i wonder if the gtp M62 is different inside compaired to the 1 on the cobalt/redline

cause they talk about close to 17,000 rpm from them

goin by Eaton they arent supposed to spin there's past 14,000. who knows, maybe they have been finding them stable to 17,000 rpms but it still raised a longevity question in my mind.

Eaton blows get very unstable when spun past the recomended limits... i have read this a number of times and have been told this by a few GTP guys and have found it out to be true my self... I get a boost spike at around 5800 RPM with my M45 and with the 2.6" pulley and alcohol i was getting boost spikes up to 10-11psi so with the M62 i pushing out 15psi already , i wouldnt want it spiking on me....

fats02z28 - are you using the same ones that are on the Cobalts? or an older generation M62? Also if you can find away to fit it in place of the M45 and have it intercooled im in for one... (ahah would be sweet if you could just find a way to intercool the M45) as it would help out alot with my twin charged set up and would save me a bit of money on Alcohol

I am lookin to use older generation chargers just cause they are readily available and cheaper to get. The way the M45 is set up one would have to cut apart the case to try and add an intercooler. Thats about all I can figure. Keep on with your alcohol, makeing your motor an alcoholic lol.

ahah well with the amount of alcohol im going threw its definatly an alcoholic.. good thing a box of windsheild washer fluid is only $5 for 4 jugs..

Just for your info:

Some tuning guys in the UK attached the intake manifold and m62 off an ion redline to a 2.2 ecotec.

They found that without running the charge cooler they lost 30hp compared to when they were running it.

Of course, you have to take into account the fact you can't remove the charge cooler since its in the manifold, so there would have been a slight bias because of the air flow restriction when not running the charge cooler.

Thanks for the info, but these kits are for 2.4 LD9's not eco's. I am fabricating custom manifolds for this aplication.

I was mearly trying to indicate the amount of power these guys gained by having an intercooler.

glad to know youre still on board with this project. i love seeing stuff like this develop. this is going to be awesome once its all done and running.
