Gatorback belt problem with S/C
Saturday, December 17, 2005 8:32 PM
I'm looking for the size and number of the gatorback belt included with RSM Racing's Stage I S/C Kit for a 2.2L Ecotec with Automatic transmission.

I'm wondering if anyone knows whether or not belt sizes for Manual and Auto trannies for the Eco engine are different, does anyone know? If so, RSM may have sent me the wrong belt size.

This is a follow-up thread from my last one called 'boost leak ?', for those of you that followed that one. I still have the psi issue and I'm thinking the belt may be too loose and slipping.

Thanks Chris, I'll have to drop by Autzone tomorrow and see if they carry that number.

Would anyone know if RSM has different sizes for the belts for Auto and Manual trannies? I'll be calling them tomorrow but I was just curious if anyone here knew.

i have the manual kit and it came with the dayco 33.5 inch belt, now gatorback does not make that size they only make a 33 inch and a 34 inch

Im using the 33 inch right now and it works great

Thanks Rodimus, it seems as though my Gatorback is 34 inches. I have the adjuster completely bottomed out so maybe I need the 33 inch one. Hopefully I can get in touch with RSM today.

Rodimus - out of curiosity, is your belt tensioner bottomed out or do you still have room to move it down to tighten the belt?

its got maybe a half an inch or less it could go down, 34 is way too big a belt, i believe its possible even to run a 32.5 inch belt but i dont think good year makes such a thing they are about 20 bucks at autozone, i put a new one on about every 7-8k miles, its not hard to change the belt yourself, no reason to go through rsm for a part that simple

I'll have to pick up the 33 inch belt either tonight or tomorrow. Either that or possibly put the belt on top of the tensioner (smooth side on tensioner) and pull the tensioner up and tighten it that way.

One more question, Rodimus: do you have any idea what could be causing my problem, only reaching 1psi consistently (can reach 3 or 4 but drops back to 1)? Each time I push her in boost I hear a loud squeeling, could it be the belt slipping? I've eliminated the BOV, the blower itself, and leaks in the system.

Definitely not the tranny. I'd sound alot more worried if it were the tranny, haha. But its coming from the engine bay and its under boost..I can't help but think its the belt.

your belt if it's not the tranny .............

is your head gasket gone and spraying coolant on your belt making it squeel.....

Thats what happened to my winter beater like a week ago ........ only under load would it squeel.

Haha just another though .............

99% if it's this really loud annoying squeeling then it's your belt !

Head gasket is fine and everything is dry, thanks for the heads up, though.

The squeeling wouldn't bother me if I saw the expected psi, but I don't. I'm thinking the belt is slipping like a mofo and I need to either adjust from another position with the belt tensioner or purchase a smaller belt.

Well I plan on picking up a new belt from Autozone in the morning when I wake up. I hope this new belt and the ability to tighten it done more will help; if not, then I'm out of ideas. ..I've got alot to do tomorrow. I also have a project for my interior dealing with my wideband sensor..hopefully that'll go better than today (my hands are bleeding from trying to bend titanium with my bare hands).

To my disappointment, Autozone does not have the 33 inch Gatorback I was looking for. Carquest carries a generic 6-ribbed 33 inch belt that they'll have in stock in about an hour. I'm going to use that for now and see if it alleviates the problem. If not, then no sense in buying another Gatorback. I'll keep everyone updated.

this what you do, go to autozone.com and order this part no. 4060330, its been tested, been proven its cheap and it works, anything but gatorback will slip and disintegrate within a small amount of time, if you have an rsm you run gatorback thats just how it is

Thanks Rodimus, I was already planning on doing that. I was hoping for a very temporary fix to see if it does anything. But you're right, anything else just won't cut it because it won't be able to hold on to the pulleys.

Alright well I couldn't get the battery and power steering pump off yesterday. I ran out of time before I could get anything disassembled. Hopefully I'll be able to get things apart and back together either tonight or tomorrow. I did notice, however, that there was a black grease substance under the drive housing. I'm debating whether or not this was something from the install or if it leaked. Any opinions? I won't know concretely until I can get everthing done which, like I said, will either be tonight or tomorrow.

i've ran the belt that came with the kit, but i find after a week or two of hard driving the belt seems to get lose and im only able to build 2-3psi.
im goin to order a new gaotrback belt in the next couple weeks, im not really in a hurry cuz the car is off the road for winter.
