smoky when shifting gears after 5000 rpm
Saturday, December 10, 2005 11:31 AM

I'm running 6 psi of boost, my turbo is burning oil but only when shifting gears after 5000 rpm a cloud of smoke left the car and as long as started to build boost again stop smoking.

What could be the problem.?

Some question.?

How much oil flow a Garret T3 at idle.?
Mine is flowing a .5 quart by minute.

What pressure should be getting at idle and at 5000 rpm?

I suspect the problem could be pressure of oil at turbo inlet or maybe the return line, I have 3/4" line of return.

I will test the pressure at 5000 rpm.į

I posted this in your thread about electric oil pumps. In Line Filter and Restrictor. It also has info on oil pressure at the turbo.

your return is fine ........ how big is your feed.... do you have a restrictor.....

I've been told turbos can only hold 30 psi .......

BUT ... thats from "some guy" ...

I went to the largest garrett turbo supplier in ontario (DALS FUEL INJECTION) because my turbo's Hotside oil seal blew out ......(garrett t3 .63 trim)

he told me garrett turbos can hold upwards of 80 psi before oil leaks will start...........

are you sure it's BLUE smoke .... not BLACK smoke ...... most turbo cars will let off a tiny bit of black smoke when you change gears at high RPM...... they run rich for safety...... so thats the just excess gas.

our heads in our cars see upwards of 75 psi at start up ...... around 60 - 65 psi at idle.......
at least the 2200 does.........

so ......................... I dunno what to tell you .......
I hope this info helps a little

Yes, Thanks. I already have an oil restrictor fabricated by myself from a 1/4 NPT to -4AN and removed the top to place a NX Jet.

The problem is that I already have a .037 Jet but have no conected a gauge to read the pressure.

I donīt want to suspect of the oil seal until I have checked the pressure.

Lee, Thanks for the info I have read it already but wanted some more opinios from people of the forum. I'm getting one of those inline oil filters.

"most" guys on here run a -3an feed line with a .060 restrictor i believe. I run a 1/8" feed line without a restrictor and i have had awesome luck, with just the normal smoke from running a little rich. Somtimes the type of oil you run can have effect on it. Awhile back i made a post about this and some people had switched a 5-50 motor oil and it stoped the smoke, i still run 5-30 full syn.

I think you should "T" your feed line just so you know what you have for pressure, what Lee Said for pressure is pretty accurate, thats a LITTLE higher then i get but very close. Other then that i would know i'm pretty new to boost just saying what i know! I hope this helps and good luck!
