trying to learn about boost

ok, so i want boost. i was looking into buying the hahn kit for the 2.2L. then i got to thinking about peicing together the SAME PEICES AS THE HAHN KIT and see if i can make it myself for cheaper. my question is, does it matter what turbo i get? what i mean is like... they dont have turbos just for cavaliers right? so as long as its not to big it should work right?

Doesn't quite work like that. Have you checked out the FAQ at the top of the page?
You can piece together a turbo kit, but not 'the Hahn kit'. Start with the turbo manifold on ebay, add an internally wastegated T3 super 60 turbo. Buy an oil feed and return kit, along with your choice of BOV. Take it to a muffler shop for exhaust and charge piping. Buy some slightly larger injectors, a rising rate adjustable FMU and the adjustable FPR, and wax some DOHCs

thanks for the advice man. i didnt mean peice together a hahn kit, i meant... like... use the list of peice they give you and go out and see if i can find the same peice somewhere else for cheaper. if that makes any sense? i'll have to re read the FAQ, its been a while. thanks for the advice so far

like... check out this thread it'll answer all your questions:

The perfect turbo match

To kind of give a little insight...

you don't turbocharge your car, you turbo charge your engine.

Knowing the basics of your engine's characterisitcs and arcitecture will make selecting a turbo a little easier

Also, you want to decide how you want your car to drive, what kind of power output you're looking at (IN THE REAL WORLD), and how much you want to spend.

Kits are good if you don't know anything or have a lot of money to blow. It includes everything you need in one shot (usually) the downside is cost... and sometimes flexibility isn't designed into aftermarket kits for user adjustability as far as tuning.

peicing a turbo set up together on your own lets you have more control over how your car will run, its optimal performance setup, and peak overall potential. Also, it'll educate you along the way and make you a better tuner and a better mechanic (when something goes wrong.. because it WILL eventually)

A peiced together kit usually costs less, but requires more extensive knowledge in product selection and knowledge of the platform its being installed into. So user friendlyness is not a pro of a custom kit.

read these and learn something. They really do help, trust me.

Turbos don't really work application specific, they work according to the manifold you have. You can put a turbo on any car as long as it fits and the manifold is the right manifold to mount onto it.

Like these guys said before, read up on how turbos work, what exactly turbos do to your motor to actual gain you power, what parts you would need for a properly working turbo setup and understand how to maintain a turbocharged vehicle.

If you need any help, feel free to either post or you can contact me personally (check my registry). I have no problem helping people out and you can reach me whenever.

Good luck
