I officially give up
Saturday, December 03, 2005 1:09 PM
I got my turbo system put together and the thing worked beautifully. Boost was at 12psi and the A/F ratio was looking good, a little fat, but not bad. So I did a little more tuning, upped the boost to 15psi cuz it seemed like a good idea, and the damn thing was absolutely brutal. Right up until my oil pressure went MIA and the motor told me to go #$&% myself. I now have no motor, no money to fx it, and one very large and very expensive paperweight. And I'm pretty sure the turbo got seized up from the lack of oil too but that's the least of my worries. So it's back to the drawing board, kids. Just thought I'd share my sadness with all of you.

15psi on a stock internal LN2? If you gave me a call or emailed me I could have told you that would happen...

Sorry for your loss, but I think you just went a little overboard with the boost there.

Doesn't look like it was stock (IIRC stock compression on a 97 is 8.9:1, so those would be aftermarket pistons)...also he said he lost oil pressure, so it had nothing to do with the boost he was running.

LOL... I knew what would happen, bro. But to put you at ease the motor in my car wasn't all stock. The engine I had used to build the kit was stock, but the engine in my car wasn't. Once I got everything tuned baseline I put everything in my car and swapped the AEM EMS into my car as well. My profile is a little old, but I had added billet steel rods from Mantapart and forged pistons from JE pistons. The head was all prepped as well, and the onlything untouched was the cam but I was going to get that done eventually once I figured out what I needed. The oiling system was, however, stock. I dunno, everything was working great until pressure dropped. Then the magic smoke then the loss of power then kaplewie.

huh, has anyone else had oil pressure problems at higher boost? I dont recall seeing a lot of pump failure and the like as a common problem, and what got damaged in your bottom end?

Honestly, I haven't torn into it yet, but I'm guessing everything needs worked on. I don't know if I bent any of the rods, but I doubt it. I'm guessing the oil pump was bad, but I don't know. I had put in a new replacement I got from Autozone, and it may have been faulty. I'm hoping I can rebuild the bottim end and get back on the road, but it'll prolly be springtime. It's snowing here now and it's really cold and my garage is full of crap at the moment since I'm remodeling my house, so I'm not gonna mess with it until it warms up or I find a garage to work in. I'm guessing it just seized up because it won't turn over now. It tries, the tough little bastad, but it's pretty much dead. I already sold the other car with the motor in it to another guy for parts, the body was shot so I didn't want it. It just wasn't my day I guess.

Use a 90-94 oil pump, it will flow more. Melling even makes a high-flow version, part #M-98HV. Make sure to take some pics when the motor comes apart. I'd love to see what went out. How old were the rod and main bearings? did you replace them when you put in the new rods and pistons?

Well there's the problem. You let all the smoke out of the engine, gotta keep that stuff in there

Still sorry to hear it, the oiling system in the LN2 and LN9 don't seem to be all that wonderful, lets hope the L61 can do a bit better...

Unfortunately for him, it was already built to handle 15 psi. Sounds like the oil pump just decided to take a crap on him.

I did an extensive search for oil pumps and found nothing. I also tried www.melling.com for a part number and found nothing. Does anybody have the part number for the 2.3L high volume oil pump?????

Update: I towed the car to a friend's house in Des Moines and we tore into the motor and for the lack of better terms, its f*#$ed. I don't have a digital camera to post pictures, but the 1, 3, and 4 cylinders are all scored from lack of oil and there's metal filings in the oil pan. I'm guessing the 2 cylinder is in the same condition but it's just a little below TDC so I don't know. The turbo is ok, doesn't look like it's damaged any and the center section still spins freely, and the head is ok. I'm probably going to ditch the motor and sell what can be salvaged or maybe use some of it on my other Cavy since it's identical to this one. I need the money so a friend of mine is going to buy the turbo setup for his car, and I'll make sure tell him to look into the oil pump mod so he doesn't do the same thing i did.
