They serve a purpose and they work well... when the block or head are O-ringed. Without o-ringing, no seal.

Screw that, I've had my SCE copper gasket for years. I don't mind the o-ring, it sounds like the best possible seal to me. Heck, Adler and Mike K both ran copper gaskets without problems, right?
