Intercooler or Non-Intercooler?
Wednesday, November 02, 2005 6:14 PM
I was wonder if Iam going to run only 6-8psi, then is it important to get an intercooler, or can I do without it. I have a 95 Chevy cavalier 2.2L.

Thanks

My car (93 Cav, 95 engine) is at almost 8 psi non intercooled. I'll tell you that it's easier to tune the car if it's intercooled. Without the cooler, intake air temps climb way high during warm weather making it tough to keep some of the fuel parameters correct. But if you know what you're doing it's possible to run safely without the cooler. I'm going on two years with my setup.

You can run without the intercooler fine but it will run really hot all the time. Plus, you will get more power running an intercooler and have less risk of detonation.

OK. Running without an intercooler: More velocity straight from turbo. Air is obviously much hotter, and less dense. Higher EGTs and typically lots of detonation.

Running an intercooler: You will gain what you lost in velocity in charge temps. It's safer on your motor by colder air entering your combustion chambers, as well as no detonation and the close to normal EGT's. It's honestly best to just intercool it.
