Oil inlet restrictor... Are you running one?
Friday, October 28, 2005 9:49 PM
My turbo is in the process of being rebuilt. Reason being is because the oil seals are blown. I had an ATPTurbo.com 0.060" Oil Inlet Restrictor installed in-line with the oil feed line. My oil feed line is -3AN, which calculates to 3/16" in diameter. I was told that I don't need to run this restrictor, as it could have been the reason for blowing the seals. The restrictor "restricts" the flow, but shoots a higher-pressure stream into the turbo's center housing. Make sense?

How many of you run a restrictor and how many of you just run a line directly into the turbo?

i have heard of people using this, but alot don't. i use 4-an feed, and wouldn't use a restrictor, toss it out.

I use 2 ristrictors ....one at the head and one at the turbo. Helped alot!

I use restrictor.
Didn't have one at first so the turbo got alot of pressure/flow which took away from the rest of the engine oiling, and caused me to spin a bearing due to lack oil oil in other parts of the engine. Your car was design to run at a certain oil flow/pressure. When you take some of it away you increase your chances of destroying your motor.
I was using straight 4an line to my turbo too. So by adding the restrictor it keeps the rest of the engines oiling pressure up as well. I just wok up so I feel like a retard to to explain this.

wouldn't a pressure regulator help slow the flow of the oil as well?

I have an adjustable pressure regulator that I was hoping would work.

why is it that this restricted fitting works for some but not all?

I'll be using a -4an line.

-3 line, no restrictor and a properly functioning PCV system.

you are suppose to add a little more oil to compinsate for the needs for the turbo

Just a thought because it happened to me.......

How big is the oil return line on this turbo in question..... I blew my turbos hot side oil seal because my return was too small so it caused a "bottle neck" effect and made the hot side oil seal pop.

my turbo started to smoke so I also installed a restrictor... it just prolonged the oil seals life...... didn't fix the problem.... so check those return lines guys.... I moved up from a 3/8" line to a 1" line......................

fixed my problems.....

I am running 5/8" drain hose. It's maybe 1/2" from the top lip of the oil pan. Above the drain plug.

fyi: -10AN is 10/16", which is 5/8"

There is no mechanical or theoretical reason I can think of or have read about to run pressures of 60+ psi or more to your turbocharger. I run a variable restrictor which I set myself in the form of a knob. Many people have done this. With an oil pressure gauge you can "dial in" what pressure you want.

My turbo smoked like a chimney when I went above 60 psi, and now I dont see over 50 to the turbo and have zero smoking issues. Hot oil pressure is around 5psi at idle. Some people run zero reported psi on their gauge and have had no problems, but I like to know if I have pressure there or not, even at full oil temp.

I have the same setup as above. Controlling the pressure to the turbo by a valve with a guage after the valve. But when the engine is cold it sees almost 60 psi then when it gets to normal temp it is around 15 and sometimes lower. I was wondering if only letting it see below 20psi would be alright...i was worried. now i will turn it down a little more so it doesn't see so much when cold now that i know 5psi when hot will be fine. i learn something everyday!!!
