Turbo off of probe 2.2l
Thursday, October 27, 2005 8:40 PM
Im thinking about getting into boost. I'm on a pretty tight budget being a 16 year old in school with a part time job and still having insurance to pay. But a few days ago i found a friend that had, i think a 92 or 93 ford probe. it's a 2.2l turbo. Just needed to know if the turbo and intercooler would fit on my car without problems. Like if its gona be too big or too small. very new to turbos. just trying to figure a couple things out so i can get my custom kit pieced together. Thanks in advance.

The intercooler from one of those is actualy pretty good. the turbo however is crap.

Do you know if there's anything else i can use off of it that would be even worth pulling. i can basically take anything i want from it.

well if your on a budget like most people grab the turbo, intercooler and piping maybe. most turbos on stock 4 cyclinders are small. it'll work but you got along road ahead don' t rush into things and go read maximum boost by corky bell

One more question. What about injectors. How many cc/min or could i just yank them off that car as well.

96 2.2 ohv. It has alot of miles on it right now ~165k. But im about to have it rebuilt so it will take to the boost a bit better.

any thing is possible with the right tools unfortunately some people may not agree
but nothing is possible if you dont try .

i dont think that motor would handle boost very well, it def. seems like a tired motor, maybe just start saving up all the parts and once the motor is rebuilt throw it in, or find a junkyard motor or used motor with less miles..

you could turbo that but in my opinion I dont know how well it would hold up

has the motor been well maintained? whats the compression on the cyclinders? i
would get a spare motor to build up while yours is boosting then if it goes slap the new one in.i think the 96 2.2 is still bottom feed injectors so i am not sure what everyone does for injectors since i have parted ways with my old 2.2 and never got to boost it.

my saturn has 130k and its boosted but been maintained well, and i have a good setup w/8psi been boosting since may and still going strong. (rebuilding soon to do some work to it)

but i'd rebuild it just to be safe

really, the best way to get around the side-feed injector problem, is to do a top feed injector conversion.

Slowolej, on this site has had success with TBI injectors, and modifying his stock injector drivers. (he has a 2nd gen, though)

The turbos are tiny pieces of junk and it probably has a lot of shaft play by now. Sure grab the side mount intercooler if you want to. You can use it if you want to attempt to keep a sleeper look. Of course, mounting it out of view would require some good fabrication skills and possibly the loss of a very valuable system: your air conditioning.

2nd gen won't differ in much that the engines are still the same. i've heard of people using saturn tbi injectors also. top feed conversion is the best idea and i've seen it done a few times

Or just do what I'm doing and get rid of the 95-97 2.2 all together

now where's the fun in that?

I ordered my injectors, found a fuel rail, and got my injector bosses sitting here I'm doing the top feed conversion.

everyone has their own wants, i am sure the 2.2 can be a good motor boosted, i like dohc's more i'd say because the higher rpm capabilities, nothing like taking boost to 7k
