Setup nearing completion. PICS :-)
Monday, October 17, 2005 4:22 PM
Hey everyone,

My project is nearing completion. I know the pic is small, but that's the only size pic they'd let me upload here.

A little about my car. It's a 99' Cavalier 2200. Has a little over 100,000 miles on the engine. The car has been maintained well.. The plan is to efficiently turbocharge the car at low boost to make it a more fun daily driver. At this point I'm not focused on making mad power, or heavily boosting the engine. Keeping it simple and efficient.

In the picture:
Log style Manifold from a guy on E-bay
Garrett T3 super 60 turbocharger. .48 exhaust side. .60 compressor
Stainless braided 1/4" oil feel line
Brass oil feed fitting
Turbonetics couplers
Custom made charge pipe (I made that pipe, did all the welding and metal work)
HKS SSQV Blow off valve
Blue breather filter

Enjoy, It's small, but ya can see what I got going on...

looks good for a non-intercooled set-up. be careful getting out of that tree.

that looks good, where's the fuel delivery upgrade?

congrats on the build, once you're hit by the boost bug, you'll want to turn it up.

if you are smart, you'll go intercooled as soon as possible. $155 for a Johnny Racecar intercooler and another $40 for piping, which works great considering you can do it yourself.

I agree that the setup will be more efficient with an intercooler. I know you'll gain more power with the cooler, denser air charge. I see that. Since it's getting cold outside now, fall is here, and winter is approaching... I'm going to stay non intercooled through the winter months where atleast the ambient outside air and overall temperature will be cooler and denser. This way the overall temperature of the turbo, exhaust, and charge air will be somewhat cooler making this setup a little safer to run compared to running it in the dead hot summer months...

I don't think you quite understand HOW HOT a turbo gets...... Winter temperature once the car gets up to operating temp..... is not going to do F#$K all for your IAT's.... Sorry dude.... Spend the extra 300 and get a nice front mount set up ....

Money well spent...

Why is everyone going all intercooler crazy. 6lbs is not a whole lot of boost. Just make sure you're on the rich side, and take out the appropriate amount of timing for the corresponding boost level.

lookin good. love when people take the initiative in building a custom kit!! would definetly recommend an intercooler asap as soon as you can afford it. no sense spending the money you did to build this kit just to have the motor blow after a couple weeks. never dealt with a 2200 engine but from what ive read/heard they aren't the strongest platform in the world. either way, kudos on getting everything together and done!!

All he said is that is not the stongest motor. And by average its probably among the weakest 4 bangers use in any car in the last few years.

you're fine on 6psi non intercooled

and no fuel upgrades

but... you might want to have an EGT gauge and wideband on board just to make sure

looks good man

you need some kind of fuel upgrade. stock N/A fuel systems aren't meant to handle boost, not even 1psi. running 6psi you need something to add more fuel or your engine won't last long at all.

Exactly, the stock fueling system is not made to compensate for possitive pressure. Any boost is going to make you lean. That turbo also flows a lot of CFMs for that engine. GET SOME FUEL!
If nothing else, at least add an FMU to the equation. It is much better than adding an engine. If at all possible, intercool it too. Nobody is here to rip you off or tell you things that aren't true. We speak from experience.

If I go boost, hopefully over the summer, I plan on only 6psi really but im gunna go with 24lb injectors, Cartech FMU, and an inline and im going to intercool it lol. Im not taking any chances really.

YAY SKILZ !!! trying to prove me wrong again ... I have my own critic here...... geeze

n hstylez....

you don't need a fuel pump........ intercooler however is a good idea.......

and you WILL run lean at 6 psi on z24 injectors......

Like everyone else i'm goin to have to disagree with you on this. I agree that 6 psi non-intercooler is doable but you need fuel upgrades of some sort to maintain the correct a/f ratio.

seriously you have no idea what you are talking about -- he would be running atleast a 15:1 a/f if he did no fuel mods

just with the change of weather and 5 psi my car crept from 11:1 a/f to 12:2 on the wideband --- bottom line is you need fuel upgrades to do 6psi

without an IC it will just run hot -- i would def atleast get an afpr and injectors or you will need a new motor
