** Log Manifold Compared to Equal length Header **
Friday, October 07, 2005 11:24 PM
I was just wondering if you would have 2 identical ecotecs/2.4's/2200/2.2 on the dyno say. running 8 psi how much difference would each manifold make?

I just saw a video where a civic with equal length ran 325 whp, they swapped on a log and ran 255 whp...

Now I dont know but I think 70 whp from swapping manifolds is a little weird, they coulda lowered boost, I dont know but does that sound excessive to anyone else?

They have to have turned up the boost to gain 70 hp through a manifold. I know they flow better, but not so much as to get 6 or 7 more psi worth uncontrolled.

I've heard of the same thing happening with different cars on multiple occasions. I've even seen video proof. It makes sense if you think about it. If you actually project the exhaust gasses orderly at the turbine instead of just moving it by sheer pressure build-up, it should be much more efficient. Personally, I'm a believer. I am taking a little trip to Brian's shop where we are making an equal lenth manifold for my bird next week if the engine is running by then.

It's very possible...all manifolds are not created equal
If you put a shoddy loggy on after a very swell equal-length, you could easily see those changes.

A guy back in seattle was running the stock manifolds on his bi-turbo S4 (log style I believe) then he bought some DAMN expensive equal lengths and picked up around 50-63whp across the chart....

Then again that was from stock mani to equal length polished, so I'm not sure. I ALWAYS hear of people trying to go to equal length mani's when they're running boosted apps though if they may mean anything to you. I hang with alot of Evo, Audi, BMW guys and that's all they talk about mani wise.

unless you can route a exhaust pipe that goes from your stock exhaust manifold to the turbo and route it back to the down pipe. I'm working on that, but it'll take time and money. Working too much now.

yeah, plus I dont think anyone makes an equal length for the ecotec just yet, so I will have to see....

I believe it has a lot more to do with the design rather than the style of the manifold. If both manifolds are well designed there shouldn't be a drastic difference in the hp they make at the same boost pressure. In general the shorter the distance between the head and the turbine the more responsive / faster the spool will be but the longer tubes headers you'll have a better exhaust flow providing slightly higher top end power but in return you'll have slighly more turbo lag. It really depends on where in the rpm range you need to make you power, a drag car will benefit more from a long tube header with the higher top end power but a car that is built for autoX type racing will benefit more from something like a well designed lod style manifold.

I was talking to Bill Hann at Nopi Nationals a couple of weeks ago and he said below a 500hp application there was very little difference between a log style or equal length. So unless youy planning on going big I would just stay with the log manifold and use that extra money some place else i.e. a more efficent turbo or something of that nature.

thanks I really appreciate the help guys

after my motor build I wanna shoot for 400 whp and then after I get a full stage 2 head I wanna shoot for the magical mark of 500 whp, break that barrier and take it back down to like 450 or so...

so what do you guys think the comparison between a turbo manifold made out of my equal lenth stock manifold, to a log style or true equal lenth header style?

I've been having this argument with a buddy of mine for awhile now, he's got a 86 daytona shelby Z with a log style and ive of course have a 2200 with an equal length header. He says theres no difference, is there any data out there that can prove him wrong?
