Sup guys.
My goal if I go turbo is about 220 whp. Both turbos can get me there reliably. But I want to be able to stay off boost when I want to. Say lower than 2500 rpm I'd like to stay off boost. Which turbo should I get ? I think there are other variables like trim but I'm not too good with these details. If you wish to educate me go ahead.

A 60 trim T3 with a .48 turbine a/r should be a great sized turbo for your needs. It will support up to 300hp if you feel the need for more power down the road and should provide near instant boost when you mash down the pedal. You should be able to stay off boost all day long with just about any sized turbo, its all a matter of how much throttle you give it rather than rpm. In theory you should be able to drive down the street in 1st gear at 5,000rpm with only giving 5% throttle and still not be making any boost....

That's nice to hear. You see we have harsh winters here in quebec (-40 celsius) and I would be running my turboed sunfire in the winter. So all I have to ask when shopping for the turbo is a Garret (i think) T3 .48 turbine a/r ?

oh yeah this is also for a setup with stock internals. will I attain 220 whp on a reasonable daily use PSI setting ? I'm guessing anywhere from 8 to 10 psi. I will also have full 2.5" exhaust. But the rest will be mostly stock if you exclude what is necessary in a turbo kit like intercooler and fuel mods + HP Tuners software

Remember if you dont put a lot of load on the engine, you wont be in boost.

To get to 220 whp you'd most likely be around ~240 hp @ the crank. I think these car's have like 140 hp @ the crank to begin with so if you can acheive that significant of a performance increase with something as simple as a T3 or Hybrid T3 turbo @ 10# that would be crazy. I was running 20# on my T3/T4 on my TBird Turbocoupe with full 2.5" exhaust, ported exhaust manifold, no cats, dynomax ultraflow mufflers, roller chamshaft, gillis boost valve & quite a few other things and didnt see that type of increase in power.

You should be able to get in the 220 whp range with 10-12 lbs. of intercooled boost and a good tune.
you should get 220 whp from a t3 super 60 at probly 7-8 psi.... with tuning...

yeah, 8psi intercooled would be an easy 220. people running 8 on hahn kits have seen over 230, and hypsy, running 15psi on STOCK INTERNALS, sees high 12s and over 300 horses.
Skilz - I CAN'T stay off boost with my Gtz. even if I give it 5% throttle. I get boost as soon as I step on the gas. But of course it's on an HO engine.

^^^listening... what is the truth about this ? I don't think the fact that it is a HO engine would make it so different to an eco, aside from obvious power differences, why wouldn't the HO engine be able to stay out of boost ? If I can,t stay off boost, I will definitely get a bigger turbo so it doesn't spool up until 2500 rpm.

I'm running a 60 trim t3 and I can vouch for it being a good choice. i started at 5lbs, was there for a while, then went to 7 and I am now at 10. The turbo is a pretty good match for the eco. When I want boost it comes in at just over 2000 rpm and I'm at full boost by 2800. At the same time if i want to (which isn't very often) all that's needed to stay in vac is keep the throttle below 50% generally speaking.
Car is going on the dyno next weekend, so we'll see what it puts down then, but so far at 7psi at the track I was babying it and still went 14.2 @99.6mph. That's going super easy out of the hole and shifting like my grandma would

an Ho engine flow alot more than an eco. The displacement is higher, bigger cams, ...
My turbo is a T3/T04E. .48 exhaust side and .70 compressor side. I get boost @ 1500rpm and I have full boost @ 1700rpm.

it's all about CFM and compressor maps. you just have to figure out what turbo, based on how much your motor is pushing out, what will spool best based on your powerband, etc etc

All of this information has made me exicted. I had no idea that these little car's were capable of getting so much out of a simple turbo. I can't wait till my warranty runs out

it's not exactly easy and cheap... but with boost it doesn't take a fully built motor to hit 13s

It helps when you've work in a company building turbos for the military. alot of choice.
a really small turbine housing for fast spool and a really BIG compressor for alot of CFM. Only problem is, I tough the turbo would spool later but it's spooling really soon. It's a bit annoying in town going 30 in 3rd gear and having the BOV blowing off all the time.
