Fuel Injector Question...
Monday, September 12, 2005 10:46 AM
Before I ask, I am sorry if this is asked way too many times or what not.

My question is, what exactly happens if you put larger fuel injectors into the 95-97 2.2L?, with boost that is...

My bro has a 95 2.2L and hes got a turbo on it with an intercooler. He put some Venom Injectors in it a while back and it ran wayyyyy to rich. Im not sure what size they are but I was told something like 270? I will have to check on this... But now he has got his stock injectors back in and the car has been running fine for a long time but still no fuel so its slow as poopie.

Another question I have is, if these fuel injectors are 270?? whatever that is, would they work in my 2200 with boost?

well you can't just throw larger injectors in and expect it to run right. you have to have a way to tune them.

2.2 injectors are different then 2200 ones. you dont want to just drop larger injectros on a stock pcm. boost or not. you need to controll them properly. you can run slightly larger ones with an fmu, or use a piggyback fuel computer (like e-manage) or a standalone. there are several universal ones or if ya feel like getting really involved get a megasquirt then ya can run damn near any size ya want

I think they are talking about the 2200 engine. YOu can run bigger injectors but you have to control them with an FMU. Never thought i would say this but boy am i lucky to have a 2200..

You can run any injectors you want so long as they can supply enough fuel at maximum ve. but you have to be able to controll them (fmu, e-manage, ms, ect) to much fuel aint whats going to break your engine. its the air that requires that extra fuel and the resulting power that tends to break @!#$. I dont know much bout the 2.2 / 2200 but i know its a bitch to get injectors for the 2.2, its my understanding that the 2200 uses standard bosch style (sized) injectors with are easy to find replacements for. dont expect to drop in bigger injectors and make more power, that just isint how it works. have a reason to upgrade and do it right!

so instead of running bigger injectors i can just run more in the charge pipe..........

and then control them with the megasquirt

i wanna put 2 extra in my charge pipe........should i put them on opposite sides or have them 2 on the same side just spread out

There's no "little bit bigger" injectors for the 2.2. But I think Stevefire is onto something.

An extra injector only turns on during boost, so it doesn't affect non-boost driving. It's an old school way, but it works. You need to place the injectors so they will supply fuel evenly to all cylinders. This is usually easiest at the TB. Putting the injectors in the charge pipe tends to leave "extra" fuel in the charge pipe after a hard boost run, and it's slower to get fuel to the engine when boost starts.

Megasquirt may not be what you're into. It's a kit that takes some assembly. You might want to look at an already built EIC.

so ur saying weld them in front of the butterfly plate?.......like cut into the front of the throttle body and weld em there?

How about a plate that bolts between the TB and intake? You may have to put the injectors somewhere else, but it's better if you can get them in the intake or behind the TB.

but itll run fine if i put em in the charge pipe....just keep em close to the TB is all ur saying...

wat if i have em in the same spot just one on left and one on right.............ill just make that spot closest to the tb as i can get....

Yes, as close to the TB as possible.

extra injectors are a prooven method of adding fuel for boost and megasquirt is a perfect way to controll them. the problem with the setup is the intake manifold is a "dry" design and isint optimized for atomized fuel delievery from the throttle area to the runners. you can just make it pig rich just to be safe and the fact that the intake charge from the turbo will be relatively hot willhelp keep the fuel atomized. so its a bit of a fair tradeoff. but why bother with all that hastle???? if your willing to run megasquirt and install 2 extra injectors for the same cost or less you could just get 4 upgrade injectors and let ms controll fueling alltogether. why run it as a piggyback if you dont have to?

see the problem there is..........There are no injector upgrades for the 2.2.....so im stuck with extra injectors in my charge pipe......there is no other way to go...besides top feed conversion which is a pain and alot of work
