11.78...Darren Herde resets his record
Tuesday, September 20, 2005 9:09 AM
Just a quick update on Darren's car, the 99 2.4 Turbo:

He took it out again at the Battle of the Imports in Joliet, IL this weekend, first time out since Da Bash. He experimented with some taller tires to eliminate the need to shift to 5th, and it worked well:

11.78 @ 119 mph!

He finally failed a stock axle before running this number...guess it's now time to move up to some DriveShaft Shop units.

Congrats to Darren and Mike for showing what a stock 2.4 engine/trans can do with 15 PSI boost and a lightweight, very effective, low-dollar / high-imagination car.

Bill,

Good numbers. Tell him to keep up the good work. Do you have any pictures of the car from Battle?

Karo's on target! It's def a pure drag car...Lexan windows, roll bar, no interior, etc. I like it cause it's a total owner-built, low-cost deal. Darren is really creative, and not a half-bad driver either (especially considering he only takes it out twice a year, lol!). I always have to poke him a little for that, but save for last year's Bash, it hasn't hurt him too bad. We were on the phone all weekend, as I helped him find a problem that, once fixed, picked the car up a full second in ET! Gotta love NEXTEL, lol

You can also check Darren's registry...if you have any questions that does not answer, let me know.

Karo, I will see if he has any pics.

Viva la J!

must have been sunday or even the last round on saturday because the two runs I saw at Route 66 he was only pulling a high 12 , and a low 13 . congrats to him big time. I wish I got some pics of his car. That thing is on a mega diet. And runs like an ethiopian with a free big mac coupon.

Yeah, heh...Saturday we were on the phone a lot. Seems he had inadvertently disconnected the signal hose to the blowoff valve, which resulted in the valve opening during WOT operation (it needs the signal hose and the boost within it to stay closed during boosted WOT). The resultant boost leak really made the car sluggish at mid and top end of track.

Soon as we got that figured out, the car behaved correctly, and my headache stopped

I have GOT to get that boy to go testing before events!

^^^ what was done to darrens car as far as weigh reduction and modifications? not engine wise.

Re: 11.78...Darren Herde resets his record
Tuesday, September 20, 2005 5:29 PM
He's taken out weight just about everywhere. The main reductions came from complete interior removal and a lightweight driver's seat in its place, Lexan replacement windows, a lightweight sheetmetal dash, and removal of the radiator core support and front fender support structures. Of course, heating and AC are long gone. A lightweight small radiator from some unnamed Asian car (shhh!) and a cool one-piece front-end he crafted together from a bunch of stuff.

Basically, if it didn't help the car go down the track, he took it out! But it's still stock suspension, stock door skins with removed side-impact bars, I think the the decklid is still stock...no exotic body panel materials. It's all lowbuck craftsmanship at its finest.

He plans to build a motor with JE pistons and Eagle rods for next year. We are going to add PortFueler to the intake manifold and go for the gusto, 30+ PSI boost.

hey bill can u post interior shots of his car? when u say cool 1 piece front end he crafted, im assuming u mean a full fiberglass front? how much weight did the lexan save? wonder how expensive it would be to do the rear sides and the back window in lexan.

NOT EVEN WORTH IT!!!!!! Those small windows weigh no more than 5 LBS at best.........

Not he front end is NOT full fiberglass, there is nothing on the insdie but the battary, roll bar, driver seat, and alum dash with gauges.

Last I heard his car was about 1900 LBS just dont remember if that was with or with out him.

BTW Bill the picture I am asking are from Battle not the bash
