2200 Bottom end... How much Boost can it handle..
Sunday, September 11, 2005 8:25 AM
I just talked to JBP about finishing up my new port and polished head.... 1mm oversizing on the intake..... and a forced induction P&P....

So now that the weakest part of my car will be fixed..... I'm going to want to turn up the boost......... How MUCH psi can a Bottom end handle.... it was taken care of immaculately...

Bone stock bottom end..... I want to run it for 1 summer with the built head installed on a little higher boost then I currently run daily..... which is 8.7 psi................

So I can save up for a Fully built bottom......

Thanks

Nobody can answer this for you.
Keep pushing it until it goes, and then let us know.
All failures on this message board were caused by poor tuning.
Also, why would you call the head the 'weakest' point? Maybe 'most restrictive', but weakest' is far-fetched...

That depends on your tuning abilities. The block is durable, sleeves are thick, pretty low compression. It could take 10 psi on a good tune with proper fuel mods. However... just spend the extra $700 for forged rods and pistons.

It takes more one $700 to build the bottem end. You also have to consider boring & honing the clyinders, piston rings, cam bearings, rod bearings, main bearings, turning the crank if needed, balancing the crank, oil, coolant, headstuds, sealants, ALL of the gaskets, lifters, timing chain, timing sprockets, pushrods, water pump, oil pump, oil pump shaft, oil pump screen, assembly lube, freeze plugs, assembly of the short block, etc....

Yea, its alot of sh*t

it is a lot. but for someone who wants to run just enough boost that forged internals are necessary but not go crazy overboard on it (which personally i like to go crazy)...

I would say that if yor running an intercooler, and have a proper tuen using a wideband O2 then 10-12 PSi should be ok, as long as you keep the oil changed and and what not.

Tuning is the key, and an A/F guage wont do the trick, a wideband is almost mandatory, it willbe the best 350 bucks you spend.
