acceptable knock count for boosted cars ???
Thursday, September 08, 2005 5:08 AM
Just as the title says im just wondering what an acceptable knock count for a boosted 2.4 might be. I have my SAFC to read knock as well as a scan tool, so far though both are very close. Anybody have any info on this???

I would say 0 only because knock is detonation and detonation isn't good for any engines.

I ain't callin u a gold digga,but you ain't messin wit a broke cracka

Actually even a N/A car picks up some knock retard. All vibrations cause some knock retard. With the turbo being behind the motor (near the knock sensor), it is going to make it read some knock, and you might not really have knock.

this is true. keep an eye on it. and if you notice patterns when it knocks more or it gets worse... and worse... then let us know.

I was a retard, and now I'm permanently banned.

my OTC-gen. picked up up to 6 degrees of knock retard.... it head 12 degrees adv on boost. the computer pulled timing 2 degrees at a time.

i brought this same question up about a month ago or so. i am currently working on trying to find a way out to trick my knock sensor. the cavalier that "chevy high performance magazine" built was reading knock under boost. they put a 100 ohm resistor inline of the knock sensor wire and it helped tremendously... i plan on trying that and seeing what it does. i am getting about 6 degrees taken out of my timing under full boost and it is REALLY pissing me off. thats about 20 horsepower or so. but i havent got a chance to play with it much since i am away from home right now at college. i am also planning on getting rid of my vortech unit and going with a turbo setup because i want more boost. i plan on running right around 15 psi.. anybody find anything out, let me know. oh also, if you are interested in a really nice vortech charger kit, let me know, it has everything along with some extras such as rc injectors and a front mount intercooler setup. the kit runs about 8 to 9 psi.

my cav before the s/c saw as much as 8 degrees

and it didnt matter what grade gas i was using

and putting a resistor in line with your knock sensor is F'n stupid !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

allthought its your motor , if you want it to detonate itself to death , by all means add a resistor

lol ya^,

also, do you know at WOT what your timing was at?
when i ran the genisious on mine, ( updated reflash. ) as soon as the vcm saw boos it ran timing back to 12 degrees... id think the stock would be alot more than that.

n/a was in the mid 20's , i havent really watched the actual timming since i put the s/c on , been watching knock retard , and intake temps

yeah , i think my cav ran better before i had the reflash done , but the a/f wasnt as consistant , but it was richer , also the idle with the a/c suffered , it surged up and down about 300-400 rpm

but once the hp tuners comes out , that will allow the timing to get bumped up more , and allow for more fuel under boost

you dont want any knock... even the smallest could granade your engine... Go to Caspers and get their Knock gauge that is ment for the sunfire.. i have it and it works great... and i good warning gauge to have with boost.. here is the link to the site
Knock Gauge

The First Twin Charged jbody
blue car (R.I.P) - 240whp @7psi..
silver car - 305whp 315lbs.tq @15psi (91 Octane) or 420whp & 425lbs.TQ @20psi (94 octane+Alcohol Injection)
All dynos run on a Mustang dyno

i thought their knock gauge only worked with the 1 wire knock , not the 2 wire knock

nope it works for 2 wire as well.

True you do not. not everything the knock sensor picks up is actually knock.

well i dont need the gauge, my safc2 actually reads the knock level, i also have a scan tool which i use too for knock. I know if possible its best to not have any knock, but i just thought some was always expected, especially on a boosted car. Right now im not getting any knock whatsoever, but the other night in another setup i had i was getting anywhere from 4-9 on the knock level, now that i have tried another setup its at zero, but it doesnt feel as strong, it also feels like it has a bit of lag in the third gear. Hmmmm
