turbo and a filter on a 2.4?
Wednesday, September 07, 2005 4:57 PM
i did some research on here and it seems lie this is a common problem. so far im not too sure what i plan on doing about a filter or where im gonna run it. i will try to run it out to the engine bay if possible without too much interference, but if that doesnt work then i might end up running a 90 degree elbow and just putting the filter straight down. id rather not do that because itll suck up more @!#$ and water when it rains, does anyone have any pics of their pipeing setup so i can get a basic idea of how to run this?

just a piece of screen and a small metal hoseclamp over the compressor housing. and should you be on a dusty road... stay out of boost.

thats unfortunatly not good enough for me, i need an actual filter, i drive the car al the time and in the rain sorisking anything getting into my new turbo is not good. ive got a few ideas of what i might do, regardless ill be sure to post pictures of it all when its done just to pass the good word along. maybe the guy welding up my charge pipes will have an idea of two. if not ive got a couple that might work.

thanks for the help though

I currently do not have a picture. A 90 degree elbow will be fine. Water is not a issue. I know of a J that ran 7k with out a filter, no problems.

as long as you realize that the location of a turbo in your engine bay really doesn't leave much room for anything wierd to get up in there. but i mean, judging by turbo 2.4's i have looked at, a 90 deg elblow should work just fine.

so just an elbow and the filter straight down then? thatll probably be the best bet for now, i know the turbo isnt near the ground but i still dont want to risk it sucking in anything. ive just put way too much money into this thing to risk snything like that happening. thanks for the help guys, ill get pics up this weekend once its all done

yea you don't need to extend it too far. just make sure it's tight, or just incase that filter decides to bail some time, put some screen over your compressor inlet anyways... just for extra safety.

ewll it looks like i might be going with the mesh screen myself, think ill be visiting the home depot for some chiken wire tomorrow and clamping that down, hopefully i can get my hand up there enough to make it work, but right now the car is back together, all i need to do is hook up the battery and she'll fire...hopefully, lol

i don't think chicken wire is what you are looking for. you will be looking for basically window screen.

hmm, window screen is kinda iffy, what about window screen layed over top of chicken wire jut to keep it from coming into the turbo?

i think i found a sure fire way to run a filter, gonna know tomorrow i guess, lol

yea i was looking at window screen in the shop today and i remembered why we didn't use actual window screen on the turbo sedan. it's too... thin.

Truly a 90 degree elbow and a filter is easy. You can put the filter right on the end of the elbow.

thatsone of the options im looking at, the pother being that i ru na 2 inch piece of pipe and then put the filter onto that, ill see what the guy says will work best and go from there

if you insist on running screen atleast get the good stuff. high end replacement windows come with fiberglass screen. ou can find rolls of this if you look hard enough. its not like to do much if any damage if it ended up in your engine + its stronger then ANY metal consumer grade screen your going to find.

Why not just clamp a filter right onto the compressor inlet? Why an elbow?

you risk melting it by just clampong it on i guess. and elbow will feed it some fresher air.

i dnno, car didnt get done today, im levig it in the hands of the guy i baught it to to find the best routing for it

Ah, I see. I've just seen it done like that before. Didn't take melting into consideration.
