GM S/C: Fan coming on @ when temp at 1/2
Wednesday, September 07, 2005 5:56 AM
Hey guys,
well, is this normal? My car is NOT running hot by all means, but the fan kicks on when it reaches operating temp (gauge is a @ 1/2) and stays on. Or does that mean something is wrong?

Thanks
Nate

Are you using your A/C?

Or on idle too long or maybe an 02 sensor going faulty.

Do you have a CEL?

my fan is only on when my a/c is

get your car scaned to see if there is a code , even if you do not have the light on , get it checked

The fan turning on when not at an overheating temperature signifies that a diagnostic code has been tripped. Not all codes will trip the CEL...especially when there's only a single instance of a problem.

From my dealings with the CEL, if the fan is on the CEL will be. The fan coming on for a problem, shows it is a more serious of problems. Sometimes you will get a CEL and no fan. I have never had a Fan run with no CEL. Normally if there is a bad sensor, or disconnected on the CEL and Fan will be on.

P0107: Map sensor low voltage will trip the fan before the CEL if the map sensor dips below the threshold a couple times in a row or once for more than 6 seconds.

The GM service manual explains this as well as the conditions for every code for our cars. It's different for a lot of the codes. There's no distinct answer to which is tripped without actually reading the code.

mm.

I don't have a/c so thats not it.

Cel light was on..but even before s/c, it was always on. Never affected performance, or plugs, always thought it was the hi flow cat.

That was the first time the cel was on, and the fan would kick on. I reset it and it seems fine. No cell, no fan, no missfire (yet).

If i get around to lenko, i can borrow his scanner
